Opponents argue that the fees place Connecticut licenses among the most expensive in the area without reinvesting the money in parks and recreation, while advocates see the increases as putting Connecticut sportsmen’s fees in line with the cost of living and a valuable source of funds in the economic downturn.January 20, 2010 Page 11 of 22 2010-R-0029

Recieved another reply,

Quote:
Thank you for your email. I share your concerns and working on trying to reduce the doubling of the fees for hunting that was part of the state budget package. Any reductions of the fees would be part of a budget adjustment package that might be offered in the next three months. I did not support the budget passed last year that included all of these increased fees.

However, there is no guarantee anything will change given our fiscal situation. Currently all of these fees go to the General Fund which pays for all government operations.

I hope you will be able to visit Connecticut in the future.

Spoke to Bob Crook last night at the CAC meeting in Hartford.

Latest update from Bob is that:

Three bills are coming out suggesting a 20% fee increase: Individual bills drafted by legislators Hurlbert, Bachiochi and Kissel. A bill drafted by Sen Defronzo was put out earlier this year.

Bob thinks the fee issue is going to be raised in the Environmental committee either tomorrow, Friday or early next week. Public hearings to follow. Bob's goal is to get the fee reduction passed by April, prior to fishing season.

Bob advised that the bill must go through four committees: Environment, Transportation, Finance and Judiciary committees before going to the floor. Support of the Finance Committee Chairs Eileen Dailey and Cam Staples are key to getting this bill to the floor.

Bob is also submitting his own version of the bill suggesting a 25% fee increase, therefore making it easier for the fee reduction to be viewed as revenue neutral. Bob has included several new license combos in his version to help raise revenue in the options he suggested.

As of yesterday, Bob has identified fifty five supporters in the Legislature. He noted that the issue has bi-partisan support in both the House and Senate. Bob said that Sportsmens’ calls and letters have been effective in raising awareness and support for this issue.

Finally, Bob said that sportsmen should continue outreach to legislators during this critical period. We're making an impact, but nothing is certain and IT WOULD BE A MISTAKE TO TAKE ANYTHING FOR GRANTED AT THIS TIME.

More to come as I get it.

Great Job everyone, I applaud your efforts...

Is there a way of knowing which Reps are against the decrease in sportsmen fees? Those are the people I would like to address from a out of staters point of view...

I can't tell you for sure who is against decreasing fees.

However, here is a list that Bob Crook (from the Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen) claims have "...indicated support of the sportsmen fee reduction to a 20-25% increase of the previous 2009 fees rather than the 100% increase."

DJP shared some perspective on the entire procees, which may have some relevance to your question. In some many words,DJP said that the proposed bills will in amd out of committees before they ever get to a vote. In these comittees there is a lot of politicking taking place ( You scratch my back I'll scratch yours). The short of it is that votes today may change tommorrow and those who are strongly on our side need to hear that they have our support.
Bottomline, all the political players should be a target for our phone calls, emails and letters.

Tmack, if you care to share some of your points, I will integrate them into my letters.

I have written all three of these people (Senator Roraback, Rep. Craig Miner & Congressman Chris Murphy) regarding this issue prior, but after the game dinner last night I decided to get a little more in depth with my words and used the SAC page here on the site to help re-word my letters and send them off again. I will post if I hear back from them.
I strongly urge all of those on the site that have not done so to take the time and write a letter or letters.
