Keep them iced - slows them down just enough so you can get a hook in them. Don't forget to bring a few rags.

Right place on the wrong tide.... is still way better than the wrong place on any tide wink2

Plenty of good articles pop up with a google search. I just spent my lunch break reading the first 6 articles that popped up! I also did some research on knots for fluoro to braid.

Gawd bless the interwebz!

I am a commercial photographer in Ffld County - drop me a line if you would like to get some photos of you day on the water or in the field. I am trying to broaden my portfolio to include lifestyle images of hunters/fisherman in action.

that is a really nice write up by Stu.

I usually store them in a bucket with some freezer packs.

Also, I think if you 'rough up' the eel (scrape it with the back of a knife or put some shallow cuts in it to make it look wounded) it helps.

Keep them on ice, but not in the same bag (ie: bag of eels on top of ice/ice pack). Beware that they will crawl out anywhere and may die somewhere hidden in your car/boat and rot. Rags/rough type cleaning rags definitely help.

Do not put the eels in a bucket of water without a pump. If you put them in a dry bucket they will eventually drown in their own slime. I use a double bucket... Drill some small holes, 1/4 - 3/8 inch, in the bottom of a bucket and put inside another bucket(without holes). Put the eels and a chunk of ice in the top bucket. The holes allow the eel slime and water to drain into the bottom bucket. As long as you keep them moist they will last for a very long time.

Pick up this month's (September) On The Water for a solid article on intro to eeling.

I'll add one thing. Don't be afraid to fish them dead either. If you have no means to keep them alive after an outing, pop them in the freezer. Dead eels are better than no eels.

very good advice. I usually buy eels at CToutfitters because it is a stones throw away from my house. I use the same method as fish fanatic. When I drive from Wethersfield to Old Saybrook a dozen eels can ooz about a couple of quarts of slime in about a 40 minute ride. Best to have some sort of way to keep the eels out of their own secretion. Ice will stop them from squirming so much and the rags will help you grip them. Then I just use a three way rig with a heavy enough weight to hold the bottom in a fast moving drift.

The ice also helps keep them wet as it melts. Once the ice is gone I just pour a cup of water over them every now and then.
