Hello everyone. I'm going to ask a semi-personal question and I'm hoping for some advice.

I'm looking for some good clamming and crabbing spots in Milford. The reason I'm looking in Milford is because there are some nice beaches there. The state park there is pretty nice. It's sparse, but nice.

I can go and try my luck at clamming or crabbing and the kids can play in the water.

I must confess that I'm not a Milford or Connecticut resident. I'm a NJ resident and NJ shores are notoriously crowded. I live in northern NJ so getting to where clamming and crabbing is possible is about the same distance to Milford. Also, NJ towns by the shores are not friendly at all. I've been to Milford and the people there have been quite friendly and the shops and restaurants are quite nice and plentiful. It's great when I have a couple of little ones in tow.

I have reviewed the clamming map from the DOAG. It's an extensive map but doesn't really give me a good indication where clamming/shellfish beds might be located near shores on low tide. I've gotten some advice from local fishermen on the pier at Walnut Beach on crabbing locations but none of them are for Milford.

Thank you all in advance for any advice you can offer.

Due to Irene and water run-off clamming is shut down & crabbing is awful.

Yes. I checked with the DOAG about the clamming but eventually it'll open, I hope.

I was there last weekend and it's ashamed what happened to the pier at Walnut Beach. Looks like somebody vandalized it.

Any advice on clamming locations and crabbing when it does get better grin

Contact Milford shellfish commission and they will point you in the right direction and maybe provide you a map with areas that are open for clamming as some areas are permanantly closed for clamming.

I finally got my marine fishing license. I'll have to try my luck one of these days at the Walnut Beach pier.

The other week I bought one of those crab basket. I tried my luck with it but luck was not with me. I caught several of those green crabs. The kids love them, but I don't. I mean, it was fun the first time trying but not very 'productive'. Where's a good location for blue crabs?

Thanks.

Milford is not very productive in either venue but any marshy area should have some crabs. New Haven Ave. has several spots that are suitable for children. There is a tackle shop (Bobby J's) not too far from there who would help you out. Good Luck!!!

Thanks a lot for the tip on a good location to have kids along. That's always helpful, otherwise I get grief about abandoning them with the DW. laugh
