The only offshore trip I had this week was a deckhand job for One Eyed Ed. We made a good showing at the marina. All the offshore boats were having a tough day at it. That report is on Offshore reports.

Saturday I took the bay boat out alone to enjoy the water and learn more about inshore fishing before the LSU game. Once again the winds were houling but I still went. I had shrimp and artificial baits. Did not want to use up my Gulp baits. As I went around I found that the fish had moved from the areas I found them a few weeks ago. They also were less aggressive. The redfish will be moving into the dead end canals so that is where you may find me the rest of the winter. The bait of choice was a gold spoon which outfished shrimp under a cork. Redfish can't resist a gold spoon. Would love to get a calm day so I can troll the banks and just cast to them all day. This would give me a chance to use the livewell and practice culling. I have doubts about the size of the well with 2 fish at 27 inches being cooped up in it all day long. A dead fish at weighin will cost you a half pound and knock you out of the standings completly.

This time of the year the inshore guides start hunting and do not get back to fishing untill April when the trout get active again. There are still some that target redfish throughout the winter. While I was out there fishing I got a call for an inshore trip for today but I declined it because we have a front on us and the weather will be nasty. Seeing I no longer hunt I will be running the bay boat all winter just getting reds and scouting new waters. A lot of pipelines and bayou to learn and I will never learn it all even if I am still doing this at 100.

I did notice a through hull drain that was leaking so it will be replaced today if I can find one down here. Love my new boat shop for this reason. It will turn colder wnd 3 days of rain comming. Why are they allowed put plastic ones on boats? I already changed the plug and have a bronze one on it so I will do the drain next.

BTW I did get a few rat reds. They are fun to get. I compare them to harbor blues. Had some fried redfish last night.

Only used live shrimp twice. Most of the times I use frozen shrimp. I am trying to get the hang of the artificial baits. I am a canyon runner learning bass fishing. Will be learning every chance I get between fronts. I love useing gulp baits.

Hey Hoop back in the early 80's I was going to school in Biloxi while in the Air Force. Me and a couple guys, when we had free time would fish this back bay using live shrimp. We caught reds, sheephead and croaker. One of the guys had just finished a hitch in Japan and when the fishing was slow he would sit there and eat a few of those live shrimp.
We bought a cheap toaster oven and would go back to the barrocks and broil up some fish, drink and play cards. It was a good time.

Blue crabs are at the best right now. Very big and heavy!

Yes we get Blue Crabs all year around. Our water never gets cold enough for them to go fully dormant. They do move to the deeper channels in Jan and Feb and move to the shallows to feed when the sun warms the water. FYI when I say the deeper waters I mean 5-10 feet.

I have several neighbors trying to give me them all the time. I was offered some today by one of my Vietnamese friends. We supply 70% of the crabs for the State of Maryland year round. I have 4 traps but do not set them because If I run them for about 2 weeks I have nobody else to give them away to. I am licensed for a 10 trap set. I can run them with my boat or right off the banks or docks. An overnight set can yeld 5-12 keepers per trap.

I hope to get out again before Christmas. Will try to get some pictures for the next report.
