They were really thick last May during the opening weeks of fluke in the Clinton/Madison area. I couldn't get away from them.

There must be some other part of the country or world that has as shortage for this species. Too bad New Englands resident population does not migrate to that area! They can wreck a great seabass spot along with all the cod fishing grounds...

I guess then we can't make a state record for them now.

Conrad, you're just happy to learn that there is a species that you can actually catch that is edible.

Mark, I don't think that photo is a Spiney Dogfish.

I suspect that is a Smooth Dogfish - Mustelus canis
The Spiny Dogfish Shark - Squalus acanthias is a little different.

There are subtle (but really important) differences. "Sand Sharks" like in the photo do not have those subtle spots along the back or that NASTY spike near the tail that can give you a bad punture wound when held causually.

Last time I fished the Cape, there were Spiney Dogfish from the top of the water columm all the way to the bottom, for acres.

There isn't a reasonable fisherman alive that thinks these fish are in peril.

In fact, the opposite is clearly true. They are invading the Northeast in #'s not seen before.

Perhaps NOAA did a troll one day and the fish weren't there, but a mile in another direction. The troll yielded few fish = FISH IN PERIL !!!

That's true spiny dog fish, European conger plus a few more odd fish were sold as "Rock salmon". Growing up Rock salmon used to be my faverite "fish and chips" NOW these less desirable fish species can not longer collectively be called Rock Salmon beause of EU regulations that consider the term Rock slamon as misleading the public to think that the fish is actualy salmon. What a load of BS - NOBODY thought it was salmon, everybody knew it was the junk fish of the catch which made it a cheaper option then cod and plaice and that they tasted prety good coated in beer batter.
