Eddie Burger asked me to deck for him. This time of the year we have some heavy fog. Around here we have to deal with large ships, Sport Fishers, Crew boats, hunters in flat boats, and the various dredge equipment in the Mississippi river. Many times our radar does not pick up the anchor cans. to add to the confusion it will pick up a pelican which will all but bring you to a stop at times. Today was no exception. Although daylight we had zero visibility. These conditions were with us all the way from the marina until 10 miles out.

Our goal was to put wahoo in the box. We hit a few rigs with no body home. On our fourth rig we get a good hit and we have a wahoo hooked up only to throw the hook soon after the hit. Fish 1 boat 0. A few more passes and that was the only one interested. We went on to our next rig and the fish gods were with us. One of the poles jumps up then bends sharply towards the water along with the familiar song of the drag burning as the fish decides to head to places unknown. After a while we had our first wahoo in the boat. We were batting 500%.

Once again only 1 fish home. The morning was going very slow. Another rig and another miss The score is fish 2 and boat 1. On we go. The seas were building a bit but there was nothing we could not manage. It was a very long time before we were able to put a second wahoo in the boat. Back to Fish 2 Boat 2.

We continued rig hopping looking for more big boys. Our next fish was different, Although not a monster we had our first yellowfin tuna in the box.

The guys at the tuna grounds were not doing anything so we kept bouncing around trolling the many rigs. It was just a slow morning. We eventually gave in to tuna fishing. We marked a lot of fish but were getting bit off by the many sharks and kingfish. We were telling the customer about bringing a box of 50 hooks and ending our day when we run out of hooks. I cut up Barracuda and Kingfish for bait. We found one other yellowfin all afternoon.

There was plenty of action. While I was staying on the bait Eddie and one of the guys were running the lines. We did manage to get past the sharks and kings and picked up an amberjack. It did not make the 34 inch minimum length. The other guy decided to drop a small chrome diamond jig. To our surprise he came up with a nice scamp grouper. He also brought in a good size king mackerel which we needed for bait. One of these king chunks produced a very nice amberjack that topped the scales at 67 pounds. Our day was getting late and the bait was running out. This was the ticket. The tuna turned on and we quickly put 3 good yellowfin in the box. It was too hectic for any pictures.

On the way in we were once again hit with the fog. Although not quite as bad as the morning it was still very nerve wracking as heck. We got in just as dark was approaching. They already had the lights on the fish cleaning table lit while we were hanging the fish. With 1 scamp, 1 amberjack, 2 wahoo and 5 yellowfin we had a picture worthy board. It was a long day and worth every minute of it.

Every one of the fish, except the scamp, as well as the monster hammerheads we battled will hurt your arms quickly.

Can't wait for our trip. You and tony are going to hit it off very well.

Just give us the weather to get out.

I will be able to get through the fog although not wanting to deal with it.
