We had a great turkey opener this morning on state land! My five-year-old son has been begging me to take him out opening day turkey hunting. I set up in an area that we've been scouting out and have seen birds working through late morning. I used my Ameristep pop-up blind for the first time ever turkey hunting in the woods, knowing that it would be better with my son being only 5 years old and trying to keep him from spooking birds. First couple of calls I heard gobbles more than 500 yards away but then they shut up. Continue to call for another hour and a half and got an answer from a hen about 60 yards behind our blind, where we didn't have any windows open. After mimicking the hens call we immediately heard a gobble behind her. It was a perfect setup for us seeing that they came in behind the blind and when the gobbler circled around in front to interact with the decoys he was already within range. It was great that my son Stephen was able to hear the gobbles within 25 yards and we could hear the thumping and drumming as he strutted by us, he was very excited to watch the bird get taken.
The Tom Was 20 lb and had a 9-inch beard and 1 inch stubby dull Spurs.
Great hunt Isaac & Son! Yea I think a blind is a great choice when hunting turkey with a 5 year old!.....although he seems to be well versed in hunting and doesn't fidget around like many 5 year olds.
