Tn has issues with wild bobwhite populations.it is extremely complicated.private land/ public land mngmnt.Wild quail require hundreds of acres of basically undisturbed or maintained with proper seed producing plants.then you have the ground predation issue, racoons, posums ,fox etc.a ton of hawks,owels...its a bitch out there....but i digress.heard my 1st bobwhites this morning.off/ on...not a lot but enough to get my attention.large..500 acres or more of untilled or semi ungrazed land are required.we have that all around us...and no fire ants.promising....

Wild bobwhite populations have taken a hit all over the south. As a kid I used to hunt them on an Uncle's land on Long Island and when older and could drive I hunted them in south Jersey. Lots of fun and tasty to eat.

The management issue is complicated.trapping of egg eating critters is a big part.but the tendency toward land mgmnt seems to be where the money goes, not unlike duck mngmnt.habitat is the holy grail for ducks.quail mngmnt is a much tougher nut to crack.no water issues involved...so states have a lot less control
There are programs and grants available but nothing even close to waterfowl .

I hate fire ants. Or red ants. Whatever we have, they bite!

You gonna hunt them this fall?

Hunted quail in Ga., Va., N.C., and Japan. Super all-around game bird. Super for dog training, one little rooster was retrieved over twenty times over that many training trips. Finally lost him when he landed in a small pond and drowned before my Lab got to him. Great memories! One Christmas afternoon was able to score two consecutive doubles while stationed in Japan by walking up coveys with a stray mix who hunted pretty well.My men adopted him after he would sneak into camp and steal their socks, his moniker was obviously "Socks"!

I used to hunt wild quail in western tn when I was in the navy going to school in millington 1987 on the naval base which had 1100 acres of brushland also sw missouri near diggins I would see them when fall turkey hunting, but never taken a shot. didn't see any quail when I lived in nc but saw a wild pheasant on the outerbanks a few years ago near oregon inlet. Here in northern MI I saw a huge flock of young partridge 12 or 15 of them on the dirt road near the boat launch one mile away from my place in the wma, plus I have them in the woods behind me. We also have some wild pheasants in alpena county near the airport and surrounding deserted farm land. no one grew soybeans here this year the fields are either corn, hay or wheat or not planted at all due to china and wet spring.

Letting land go fallow every 7 yrs is old testament biblical.good for the land and good for the wildlife.i know back in ct the farmland i hunted ,to the farmers it was just common sense.
