I was lucky enough to catch a ride with my buddy Tom a.k.a. “Grandfather”, on a large reservoir in Massachusetts today. We targeted deep smallmouth around bait schools anywhere from 35 to 50 feet of water. We landed over 20 fish and lost many others that came off during the fight or during a spectacular jump. Drop shot and jigs both produced.
I also caught a beautiful rainbow that was almost 4 pounds and was 23 inches long. Perfectly built, this fish almost looked like a small steel head. It was hot, but so was the fishing and it was a great day.
The fish are relating to the schools of perch and smelt. They aren’t stacked up but there’s 3 or 4 hanging around to feed. Just find the bait and fish around it to pick them off. We also dropped straight down if we saw fish suspended too.
Excellent fish! I will have to try your technique on some of the deeper places I get to. When all this Covid 19 crap is over, I would like to get you and other guys out on my boat. I would really welcome some help in using my fish finder. I still cannot tell the difference between marking bait, marking fish, or for that matter, a herd of buffalo.
You guys really know the drill. When things are safe, I would be great to fish together. Hopefully some of you will be willing to teach this old dog some new tricks.
