Had a pretty good morning on Saltonstall with my buddy Randy. All told about 2 dozen largemouth; with the exception of several 12 inchers they were all 18 inches and up. A half-dozen of them were 20 inches or better, including the 23 inch fish Randy took on a spinnerbait. Using the formula for estimating weight, it was just under 5 lbs. I trolled up a 16 1/2 inch walleye and 2 lb. crappy right off the bat. Randy also caught a pair of walleyes on spinnerbaits, one of wchich was 24 inches and weighed 5.7 lbs. on the scale at the boat house. There is a picture on the wall (guy with the long blond hair). Took my sweetie out to lunch to round the day out; it was a good one.

George - Great day of fishing - that place has killer crappies in it.

Good news for Randy - that fish was a lot more than just under 5 lbs. I've weighed and measured many bass as a fishermen, but even more so during the 2 years I spent doing taxidermy. If it was truely 23" with a normal girth, you can get very close to 7 lbs. Fish vary in thickness and belly weight but that fish would have had to be abnormally skinny to be under 5 lbs and most likely 6 and change. It should have had a big head and a mouth so wide you could easily put your fist in.

The girth was 14 inches, so using the formula in the state guide that's what I came up with. It sure looked like it weighed more than the estimate, though. I'm taking my daughters out there this afternoon to take a shot at the crappies. We weighed one there a few years back that went 2 1/2 on their scale, but we've caught bigger. I've had them come up and smack a full-sized Zara Spook. If you can find a school, you can load up on 2 inch Power Grubs. There's a fish fry in our future.

Jon A and myself were there on Saturday, but the conditions were different. Cold front moved in overnight, postspawn transition, and boy, that called for some tough fishing, not to mention the 15-20 MPH NW winds, which changed direction late afternoon, and it was then when fish became active somewhat, but it was around 5:30 PM.
We managed one walleye, a trout, a largemouth and yellow perch. We were only targeting walleye afterall, and considering the tricky conditions, we did pretty well.
After Jon left, I stuck around the docks, where I dropped on nice walleye 10 feet away from it, at least I got to see what it was, and it really looked somewhere between 26-27 inches. One violent head shake and that was the end of it. She managed to spit the lure and took off. Oh well, no harm done. That's fishing, never know how things are going to be, besides, it's all for fun anyway..

Great job guys, keep it up!!

Try length squared times girth divide by 1200
It will get you a lot closer then the formular the state uses. Or girth squared times length divide by 800. I used to use these two before I bought a digital scale.
Those are some pretty nice bass you caught.

My name is Jim. You can call me slim. I row my boat way out to the middle.Cause the fish I'm after ain't so little. Pike, Trout, Largemouth Bass. Get me out there really fast. I know I'm good, really the best. The rest of you are such a pest. - By Henry Gibson
