Giant Breeder Seefs Released - 12/29/21 05:49 PM

Saw this on FB today from CT Fish and Wildlife.

Special trout stocking update- In 2015/2016, faced with significant challenges including staff retirements, availability of water, and reduction in general hatchery resources, the Fisheries Division made a very difficult decision to stop raising Seeforellen strain Brown Trout.

We are pleased to announce that things have turned around and we have been able to completely restore a functional broodline (enough fish to produce enough eggs annually to meet annual stocking goals). The result of re-establishing this broodline are about 400 5/6 year old fish, which are very large (10-15 pounds).

These fish were the base of the broodline for the past three years, providing the eggs and offspring that will be the spawning stock to meet our annual production goals. These 5/6 year old fish are now being retired. We are stocking them in 10 lakes across the state over the next couple of weeks. Going forward, any retired broodstock will be 3+ years old and not as large, but still very good size.

The lakes being stocked are Highland Lake, Black Pond (Meriden), Cedar Lake, West Hill Pond, Crystal Lake, East Twin Lake, Mashapaug Lake, Squantz Pond, Beach Pond, and Long Pond.

Please be sure to wear you PFD if boating, it will keep you above the surface of the very cold water should the unexpected happen. Don't make this fishing trip your last.

That's pretty cool, a 15 pound freshwater fish is a trophy beast. Maybe this will prompt DEEP to take a firmer stance regarding the proposed Cedar Lake launch/motor ordinance.
