Savage 212 slug gun **Update 9-26-22** - 07/11/22 11:13 AM

Purchased a new Savage 212 at Cabelas a couple weeks ago.

A couple days later gave it a good cleaning and noticed something about 12" down the rifled bore at the 2-3 O-clock position, dark line.
Looked at it with the bore scope and its a huge dent in the rifling.

Dropped it off at the factory for barrel replacement, said to take about 4 weeks.

Great to see they are standing by their product

I took a factory tour about 8 months ago because my father in law knows the CEO quite well and they are making some good stuff.

I wish they would buy the rights to H&R and bring some of their guns back

Glad that you found it before shooting it. That should have been picked up before it left the factory.

Wow! I’m glad they’re replacing it. CVA replaced one of my barrels too and gave me a better barrel for the trouble.

Maybe there was an inclusion in the barrel forging. It does seem strange that it wasn't picked up by inspection. I have a 220 I picked up about 5 years ago. It's a great shooter for a slug gun. I'm sure yours will be the same when you get it back.

In any case I'm glad they're taking care of it. One of the last New England gun companies.

I received a brand new gun (different S/N) yesterday by UPS, even though I asked to do a pick up.
I check the barrel and this gun also had the same damaged barrel problem, looks likes its not a isolated problem.
I called in to Customer Support and they want to view the gun with me when I drop it off again today.

I'm going to call the QA Manager today and see if I can discuss it with him since this must be a manufacturing issue.

Good catch on this problem. Hope you can get them to fix whatever is causing it.
When the Savage 12 gauge model first came out I bought one and found it was having problems ejecting the hulls.
They reworked the 12 and 20 models and I then bought the 20 gauge 220. I am very happy with the 220. But if you are
buying a used gun the really early builds had some problems.

I called yesterday since it's been awhile. There not giving me another new (S/N) gun, most of their in factory stock has the same defect.
The second gun is in the machine shop, they are fitting it to a new barrel.

I'll call back in another week or so to see whats happening.

Did they tell you what caused the defect? I had to go look at the bore in my 220 when I read this but it's smooth and shiny. Almost looks like it's in the raw material for the barrel

Received the gun back visually the barrel looks great.
Gave it a good cleaning and adding titanium bolt and Zeiss 3x12 scope.
Will check accuracy this weekend.

Good luck with it. I have a savage 220 and love it. I got a 4 point this summer crop damage with it. From my ground blind 125 yards. Dropped in its tracks.

Plenty of Remington 212 accutip slugs at cabelas. No 220s unfortunately.

I shoot the 220 AccuTip slugs and it appears that various on-line sellers have some in stock.

All the Accutips in 12g are 3" at Cabelas.
Just an FYI

While I was there today asked to see another 212 on the rack....had the rifling damage like mine did.
I told the guy behind the counter, he shrugged and put the rifle back on the rack.

Glad you got it back in time for the season! I shoot the 3" out of my 220. They don't group quite as well as the 2 3/4" but I ran into a dealer that had a bunch in stock a few years ago and grabbed 10 boxes.

Test the gun at the range Sunday.
First 3 shots all were touching one another like a 3 leaf clover at 50y.
Used the Brenneke Red Magic slugs.

Very happy with the performance.

Good to hear. I have an old original one that has been good. Can't wait to sell it and never have to shoot it again.
