Ice Thickness Safety Chart - 12/27/05 04:28 PM

Here is a link to an ice thickness safety chart published by the PA Fish & Boat Commission. We used a similar chart on ice safety pamphlets that we have available at the sportsmen shows.

Hello to everybody! At this time of the year when the ice is just forming and people are just itching to do some ice fishing, be careful and do not fall through the ice! We are in Southern New England not the north!

Re: Ice Thickness Safety Chart - 01/04/06 06:27 AM

this is great and thanks to encon for keeping us informed. How can we tell how thick the ice is without walking out and drilling a hole?
I work third shift and would love to go but if I'm the only one out there theres no way to tell till I drill. I know with all the snow it's even worse.

Re: Ice Thickness Safety Chart - 02/27/06 08:34 PM

Yes, thank EnCon. No matter what I don't
go on the ice unless I got two or 3 big guys walking 10' in front of me. \:D

I don;t think i;d feel safe driving my car on the ice if it was 2 feet thick.

Re: Ice Thickness Safety Chart - 12/30/06 11:51 AM

Great chart but I'd be nervous putting my snowmobiles on 6" of ice!! There are lots of spring holes up here where 2 feet of ice can turn into 2 inches in a hurry. I was cooking along on real good ice a couple years ago and found myself going across a hole about 6 feet across that gave way as I went over!! Luckily I was going fast enough that all I felt was the rear end drop. Talk about stop your heart for a second. I was alone and about 2 miles back on a lake with no one else around. They might have found me in the Spring if I'd bothered to tell the wife where I was going.. Dumb!!

Re: Ice Thickness Safety Chart - 01/19/11 05:53 PM

Heres a question, how does this chart vary depending on the amount of snow, ice, and water buildup on the ice? Do those variables not come into account pending people going onto the ice? I am just wondering, not being a smartass...

Re: Ice Thickness Safety Chart - 01/04/12 11:44 AM

Back in 1980 ice fishing on the big narrows lake just out side of Lincoln, ME, I fell thru the ice, drilling holes near an inlet, the water was only chest deep ~ but the current was pretty good ~ I was so cold so fast, I hardly made it out. One of the most miserable days of my life. That I must say was the last time I was ice fishing wink2
