It makes a wet mess. This redneck has tried it some 20 years ago. It also dulls the saw rather quickly.

Been there, done that! As Mike stated, it makes one heck of a mess. I would recommend investing in a hand auger over using the chainsaw. Just my two cents though.

I've only seen it done on TV when they're cutting out large sections for shark fishing or some other crazy stuff they're able to do way up north.

From the descriptions though, it sounds like something that would be funny to watch someone else do haha.

That is how they cut the ice for the smelt shacks up north . All you have to do is set the rake wider on the chain for a better cut . That is what we were told last year

When I was a kid we used an axe to cut holes. Augers weren't invented yet and spuds were expensive. Now that is definitly a bad way to cut a hole in the ice.
