Winchester Lake Pike

Winchester Lake Pike - 07/26/05 01:54 PM

Is the state still stocking pike yearly into Winchester Lake ?

If so how many are going/went into the lake this year.

How big would you say the first year class is now ?

Any input on how the pike program is doing on Winchester Lake ?

It seems some bigger bass are being caught this year and fewer small bass are being caught.

Hopefully we get a DEP reply on this,I am also very interested to hear how this program is going.I picked up a few smaller(15-20") pike thru the ice last winter, and one much larger one last october on a spinnerbait.I did not get a measurement but I would estimate it at around 28-30" and very fat. Also caught a couple smaller ones earlier in the fall.Winchester is one of my favorite lakes, now if I could just figure out how to fish it I would be fine.Very tough lake sometimes!

Mike G.,
Sorry this reply took so long. Yes, we are still stocking northern pike fingerlings in Winchester. Actually, we just stocked the last fingerlings for this year a couple of weeks ago. We have stocked there since '01. That year we put ~1,000 fingerlings in. We have stocked ~2,000 fish each year since then. If the pike growth in Winchester is similar to Bantam or Mansfield Hollow those fish from '01 should be at least 30" or better this year. We have conducted night electrofishing before and after we began stocking pike to assess any potential changes to the existing fisheries. We have not seen any significant changes yet. In Mansfield Hollow the data shows pretty good evidence that the bass population actually improved after pike were stocked and became established, and this has been the findings in other locations as well. We plan to do our spring trapnetting in Winchester next year for the first time and hope to see a healthy pike population with several different year classes. The fish stocked in '01 and '02 should be sexually mature and capabale of spawning. We were getting some reports of pike being caught during the winter icefishery and I have seen a few posts and gotten calls of a few others since the spring, but it has actually been less than I would have anticipated. Hopefully, pike fishing will pick-up through this fall and into next year (and beyond!).

Thanks for the reply Tim. You answered my questions perfectly.

I am really hoping the pike program works on Winchester. I have been putting in some time trying to catch a few (I have)and I will continue to do so.

Tim this is second hand information but I have heard that this summer was slow for the pike but i know several locals caught some last fall in late sept thru oct on very large golden shiners and are looking forward to this fall.

any updates on the pike program in Winchester Lake ?

It has been 7 years now since the initial stocking. Is it still being stocked annually with 2000 fingerling pike ? Has it been electro shocked in the last year or so ? Can you share an info with us on how the program is doing good or bad ?

According to the DEP website. In the Fisheries segment of the DEP website in General Fishing Information page, listed in the Fish Distribution Report : In 2008 Bantam 494, CtRiver 1188, Pachaug 6836, Quaddick 3900, and Winchester 661 fingerling Pike were released. There is some other info on the Fisheries site as well.

I've heard that they have cut back on the fingerlings there....but I know for a fact that the pike are doing just fine.

Directly from DEP:

 Quote:
... it appears that Tim B. answered most of the questions, but I will fill in some gaps and clarify a bit. We have stocked pike in Winchester since 2001 but the number of fingerlings that have been stocked from year to year has been highly variable (410 – 2009; 681 – 2008; 0 – 2007; 220 – 2006; 2,040 – 2005; 2,028 – 2004; 678 – 2003; 1,400 – 2002 and 1,133 – 2001). The reason for the wide range in stocking number is due to high variability in our managed spawning marshes. Fingerling production is typically dictated by environmental conditions. Currently we are trying to address this problem with the hopes of producing a more consistent product statewide (especially seeing as how most of our pike program is driven by fingerling stocking).

So far the pike in Winchester seem to be doing very well. In fact, a little better than I had anticipated. We still have a fair amount of assessment to do on this lake to determine overall population size and catch rates of anglers, but it does appear that the pike are growing as well as our other management lakes. Personally (and I say this after handling a few thousand pike over the years), I feel that the adult pike in Winchester are some of the prettiest pike we have in CT. Very clean appearance, nice markings and very robust body condition.

Reports from anglers have also indicated that the population is doing well. I promised not to reveal secrets, but I will say that some folks have figured out this “finiky” fishery and over the last couple of years caught a number of really nice fish, with a few over the 40” mark.

I doubt that Winchester, given its depth and surface acreage, will ever hold a large population of trophy fish, but I do think that this lake has the potential to continually produce a few monsters on an annual basis. One additional side benefit is that there seems to be some natural reproduction in the lake. I say this because we have sampled smaller sized pike (and anglers have caught some smaller 12”-14” fish) when there should not have been fish of that size in the lake. We will also be assessing the level of natural reproduction in the near future.

Hopefully this answers some of the questions, but if you have any other questions feel free to shoot me an email.
