What happens to Poached stripers? - 04/25/17 01:36 PM

Saw this on the DEEP facebook page and shared it with Fishing CT group. One of the questions generated besides the scumbags that these guys (the poachers are) was what happens to the fish that are confiscated. I answered if the fish are fit for human consumption probably a homeless kitchen or something. If not a Raptor Rehab...but though I might get a more accurate answer here. Also thanks for your service. Looked like a late night in that pic.

On 4/23/17 Officers assigned to the Western Marine Sector were conducting an evening fisheries enforcement patrol along the Housatonic River in Stratford and Milford. While on patrol Officers encountered five fishermen actively fishing and were found to be in possession of 42 undersized striped bass (estimated at 90lbs). The five fisherman were cited for numerous fishing violations including Possession of Striped Bass less than Legal Minimum Length, Possession of Striped Bass Over the Daily Creel Limit, and Fishing without a License.
Our Officers are out patrolling, however if you see any hunting or fishing violations please contact our 24 hour dispatch center at 860-424-3333 or toll-free 800-842-4537. Please remember that our social media sites are NOT continuously monitored and should not be used to report criminal activity.

If not fit for human consumption would be good to use a lobster bait (with proper OK from DEEP) or fertilizer. Shame to waste the meat.

Thanks for the update!

Seized fish are not wasted. Some go to a soup kitchen and others will go to a Raptor Rehab program or to a zoo.

Im sure they would like to know why also, after they take the time to go and investigate, do surveillance and go to the effort to charge the individuals. Your question should be directed to the courts they are the ones throwing out the case not ENCON.

Been fishing the cape cod canal a bit this year and there they take all gear, bike and if extra bass in truck, that too. Good to see with all the monster bass there this year.

Seized fish may either go to a homeless shelter, animal rehab facility etc.
