Boat shed

Boat shed - 06/15/11 01:09 AM

Having worked all last year on the oil spill and paying high taxes after expences I had a little money left over so I decided to get a boat shed to keep my boat out of the sun and weather. The sun is by far the most damaging on our boats and cars down here. The aluminum ones are ok but they fall apart in high winds. After weighing in all the factors I decided on a commercial steel one rated for 150 mph winds.

The concrete work was one delay after another with many things not getting done right untill I called it out to them and I almost regreted even thinking about this no less going through with it. The slab was to be poured 2 months before the building was to arrive. The building had to be made to specks. It is not a kit building to buy and put up. The slab finally got poured. It took 82 yds of concrete. At 7:00 the next day the truck arrived with the building. We had to wait 2 weeks for the concrete to set up before we could start the building.

There are 4 guys putting this up and I will put up progress reports and pictures. I will be able to put my 2 charter boats in it and all my equipment. The shed I have stuffed with everything will be used for bait freezers (3) and a few other things once cleaned out. The new shed will also have an overhang in front to give us a car port for 4 cars. It will have 2 bay doors 14 feet high and 12 feet high for the boats to go in and a walk in door into my work area.

Started out with a thought but why not do it right to begin with.

Sweet Hoop . I have been wanting to put one up that has doors at each end sort of a pull thru garage, drive the whole rig in , raise the other door and drive it back out with no maneuvering or even unhitching. Auto door openers of course smile.

Drive thru doors were not considered and eventhough I have the land it would only be a waste of money. I can back up a trailor useing mirrors very well. A roller chain works well to open the doors.

Living the dream and glad I still have my health to be able to do it. For those that remember me I am still in the same shape as when you saw me last.

May be bigger than a lot of homes. The slab is 40 x 65.

No "MAN CAVE" here. Would not have time to enjoy it. Too much time on the water. This building will replace the shed you see in the second picture. I have more equipment than most tackle shops. I fish everything from tuna to trout and everything in between all year long. Some of my favorite rods and reels I have 2 to 6 each of. Remember when I have customers I have to supply all the equipment and the nearest place for me to get fishing supplies is 80 miles away. That is 160 miles round trip just for some equipment.

The shed small shed in the second picture 10 x 16 will hold 3 freezers and misc items after the big one gets built. I have 2 in it now. most of the bait is gone. Almost Time to resupply.

Major frame work is done Siding and insulation will start next monday.

Up date

They came back today and got all 3 door frames up and the entrance door installed. The one on the lefr is 14' clearence and the other is 12' clearence.

The back and side have been insulated and the walls are installed. The sky light pannels will be cut and installed tomorrow. Note the shed it is replacing. Can't wait to find all the things I have stuffed in that little shed.

Will put up another progress report with pictures tomorrow.

In the meantime I have been getting a chance to try for fish while the bird experts are working. The other day I managed a nice pair of specks one of which was 18 inches. Buddy and Sushi, my 2 cats weighing 16 pounds each, are not spoiled they are just well taken care of. That day I lost 2 other good ones lifting them on the boat and released about 8 shorts. The water has been dirty the last 2 days in the areas we had to go so no catching lately.

Re: Boat shed - 06/21/11 12:20 AM

I will need a lot of electrical work done for the new shed, pool, and bait shed. The old shed and pool are on temp svc at this time because we had to tear everything up to get the new plans working.

Re: Boat shed - 06/21/11 10:18 PM

Todays progress between rain storms. Other side and front done including bay doors and trim.

Sky lights put in place.

Once the roof is on there will be plenty of light with 4 on each side. Before someone asks I will have electricity and lighting inside and out.

Already had a snake looking around the inside this afternoon.

Re: Boat shed - 06/27/11 12:55 AM

Only roll up doors left, large exhaust fan, and electricity.

Looks great and is built very strong. I am happy with it and am thinking a room and loft inside in the future.

You forgot the bathroom! Also, need to attach a diving board to jump off the roof into the pool smile1

Man is this big! I was down there last Wednesday to Sunday and saw it in person. Surpised I did not take any pictures.

Re: Boat shed - 07/25/11 01:04 AM

Now that I have gotten a little bit of an ok from the doctor I am setting up the shed and getting ready to clean out the small shed. The electrical is done and I will be just working in there forever.

Outside of the finished product. Once the motion lights go on they stay on all night. Don't like all the flood lights on all night.

This is one wall. I will be making changes as I go along and get the rest of my stuff moved in.

There is enough room for 3 boats to fit in and a good amount of work area besides. If we have to evacuate I will strip the walls into my boat and roll to safe places. We will have a lot of room to secure our other items inside it. It is built to withstand 150 mph winds and is one of the strongest there is down here.

Another Katrina type direct hit is about the only thing that can hurt it. I am very happy with the outcome of this adventure.

Hoop check out these. I have them on my house, they go to half power brightness until the motion sensor triggers them on and full bright. Then after a set amount of time they go back to half again. Automatically come on at dusk and off at dawn.
