Hey guys,

Just got in from nymphing the pooty. I headed out at about 10 am. I only had one hares ear and one pheasant tail both beadheaded. So thats what I tied on first with the hares ear on top of the pheasant tail about 12" apart. Now I am by no means a expert fly fishermen but I knew what I was doing. kind of. So I go to the first pool I usually have luck with on the spinning gear. First cast nothing, second cast, nothing: Then on my third cast my strike indicator shoots down... so I set the hook and the fight is on with my first fly rod trout let alone my first nymph fish. So I finally bring it a shore and it's a beautiful 13" bow. Not bad for my first flyrod and nymph fish. So I cast out again once I release him. and I believe 2 casts later I have on a decent brookie... But of course I lose him.. that's okay at least I didn't get a skunk at all today. So then I lose a couple fish here and there then I head down to another pool. I get there and doing the same thing just dead drifting both nymphs under my strike indicator when on the 4 cast I hook into a decent 13" brookie. landed him and released him. then I miss a bunch more hits. then I head down to the final pool I wanted to hit and I get nothing there but a LDR with a small brookie. So then I head back up to the pool I was previously at and I miss a couple fish I LDR some too. Then i head back up to the original pool I fished. So i cast to where i caught the same fish earlier i let it drift alot kinda getting discouraged because the sun was beating down. when all of a sudden my strike indicator goes down. So I set the hook and think i'm snagged so i'm like great. Then the rock starts moving... so i go this isn't a rock it's a fish. I see it and it seems to be about a 17" brown. So as it was making one hard run i thoughht my tippet could handle it... but what do you know. SNAP! takes both my flies which i didn't have replacements for and swims away. So not having my two favorite flies i leave. But all in all it was a good day with my first 2 fly fish caught a 13" bow and a 13" brookie and lots of misses and LDRs. It was awesome. I am now very confident with nymph fishing the pootatuck. \:D

Evan,
Nice accomplishment. That 17" will bring you back time and time again. I fish all ways, but catching em on a fly ranks at the top. Nice Job.

Congratulations. Now you are ready to bring the fly rod up to the Farmington. Maybe we can hit the Housatonic in a few weeks. I wanted to get up there this weekend but the water was too high. I fished Friday, but that was it. Probably will go out today up to the Farmington.

Keep practicing and you will be getting better and better with the fly rod. This is a great time of year because of all the bugs that are hatching. You will have to give it a try with the dries. Didn't you catch some smallmouth on the fly rod last year when we fished the Housatonic? I'm sure you did, especially since we were fishing in the fly fishing only section.

Flyrodder,

Your right i did catch a smallmouth in the housy last year. not too mention that salmon parr in the farmington too.

Speaking of the farmington me and Jon went today and i missed so many fish with my newly discovered nymphing technique. didn't land any but got many hits and alot of LDR's. I also caught another salmon parr on an ant and missed a bunch including a nice brown. it was a fun day.
