Went to East Twin today - launched at 5:00. Saw no deer driving in which usually is a bad sign - means we are too late. Cloudy all day - a few showers, but not bad. Hard to believe there were only 4 or 5 boats out there fishing for trout. 15 years ago, the weekend before Memorial Day there would have been 25-50 boats out. Launch fees are up to $10 – which seems steep to me.
We had an ok day. We fished until 9:30. 17 browns and two surprising rainbows. The last hour was dead though after the front moved through. Biggest brown was 18”. We had a dozen other hits on the downriggers but no hook ups.
Best part of the day was about 6:30 when the Heron came down and scooped up a dead sunfish on the surface, two minutes later the eagle came down and snagged something from the surface. Just an amazing sight. We see eagles do this at Quabbin all of the time, but to see them at East Twin is wild. There used to be a fish hawk at East Twin, but I’m guessing the eagle chased him off.
We did see a guy fishing alone with one downrigger land a good-sized trout – possibly a keeper. Other than that it was steady action but nothing great. We had doubles three times and triples once. Most of the hits were on purple or blue dolphins by R&R Spoons. The purple was the best. Most hits were 20-30 feet although we got hits on every line down to 35’. Water surface temp was 68.9°F, at 20’ it was 55°F and at 25’ 53.9°F
Next weekend I'm taking the winner of a silent auction to benefit the Untied Way up to East Twin. Hopefully we'll have a little more action.
