Well the master survived the rookie and was able to come away with three of his beloved walleye. For someone who doesn't normally eat fish I promised Robert I'd try it and actually found it good eating. Used a lemon pepper recipe from the internet. The night also produced 4 bullhead (although they are not even listed in the CT Anglers guides as being in Squantz) and 3 SMB as well, which were all good size compared to what I get from Lake Housatonic. Thanks again Robert for a great time. Walt

Walt, it was a pleasure fishing with you. Rookie or not, you have done quite well. 3 yellow bullheads and some smallies were caught with herrings, the 3 walleyes were caught trolling way after dark. After releasing mostly all of them this year, or giving them away, I have decided to keep two for the table. The larger one went to Walt, and I am happy to see that you actually liked it, not being a fish eater.
Live bait has its time and place, but after about 2 hours of fun catching bullheads and smallies, it was walleye time. And walleye we got! Found a pod of active fish and went over it 5 times, pulling in 3 fish. All males, all from the same area, which intrigued me by its location and bottom composition. Either way, that's where some were.
Walt and I were the only ones out there after 10PM. Very surprised, it was quite a good night, some "walleye" chop, brisk temps, but fishing was good.
Once again, thanks for your great company, Walt! We'll do it again!

Rookie, wind and chop are always good when it comes to walleye. Some of the finest fish are taken during such conditions. You really don't want the water to look like glass, that's not very good, and one of the reasons(among many) is that fish could be easily spooked by a passing boat, day or night, especially in water less than 10 feet deep. It is one important factor to consider if fishing shallow. Chop tends to confuse baitfish, and there's always someone waiting for an easy meal.. To them, wind is like ringing the dinner bell. Mike, only once I have taken a walleye on the surface. Well, he was 1 foot below, took the lure, but never splashed or jumped. Instead, he went right down with it.

My boat is a shallow V, and not really suited for this kind of weather either. It's OK, but not as good as I would like. None the less, better safe than sorry. Safety above all.
