Hit or miss. In my case, I had a mixed bag. I trolled from 7:30 pm up until 11:30 pm or so, mostly mid-lake. I was looking for suspended fish, whatever they may be. Ended up with 4 Smallmouths, between 12 and 18 inches, all on the same lure, a Wally Diver in black/silver.

Tried about 10 lures until I finally found one that worked for Walleye. More or less, that is...
Found one walleye that liked a Deep Diving Husky Jerk, in black/gold, trolled 110 feet behind the boat, mid-lake, water depth 42.1 feet.

She was suspended about 20 feet down from what I could tell. Not a bad fish, a 27 incher, weighed 7.2 pounds. I released her promptly. It was around 9:30-10 pm, but after that, everything went south...no more customers.

Surface water temp was reading 76.8F. Thing is, the area below Worden's Brook was a ghost town. I didn't mark anything, not even bait. Not until I got over 30 plus feet of water. The east side was like I've never seen it before. No fish whatsoever. Everything was in the main basin for some reason. More so, the herrings were deep, and when I say deep, I mean 25-30 feet down. I did not think they were alewives, but they proved to be, after dropping the sabiki rig under the boat. I didn't use the light, as I was not eager to sit in one spot and fish slip floats. But indeed, they were herrings, and holding deep. Perhaps the wind caused the layer to sink deeper on the east side, since it was blowing from the west. God knows why they were at that depth. I am only speculating.
The park and causeway area were loaded with fish, almost everything was suspended, except the herrings. So was the beach side, but well offshore. Plenty of fish, but not where you would normally find them.

I was surveyed by DEP's crew. They didn't have much to do, as I was the only boat on the lake who was fishing. I was also the only one in the parking lot.

This lake can be so notorious, you can throw the book at it sometimes, with little or no results. But in the end, I did better than I thought, under the circumstances.

Buck, you didn't miss much, trust me.

I agree, I'm real happy hooking one walleye per trip out on Squnatz! A big one is just a bonus! Great trip I'd say. Nice hooking them up trolling. I'd say you guys have it down pretty tight! SR walleye???? soon I hope! \:\)

I miss my Uncle Lewie....However;
I know he's with me on every fishing trip.

Mark, even the netters who supply herrings from NJ to CT tackle shops, are having problems netting them around and at full moon. Sometimes they barely get enough for one shop. Not sure why either. And I don't want to speculate, because I do not know.
Indeed, the thermocline is setup in somewhat of a whacky way. You won't know where it may be without some kind of equipment. In your case, the cold water intake should serve as an indicator.
One walleye is a bonus this time of year, especially at Squantz. This was actually my first time out with MY boat. Engine running excellent, Tom fixed it just right! I only tried it for about 5 minutes, and lifted it back up, since I am talking about the larger outboard. Can't use it, that's why I have the 6 HP Merc. But I had to try it.

There weren't any fish around even where the foundations are, and it was unusual. Blank screen all the way to the main basin. That's where it went nuts. Nothing close to shore either. At least from what I could tell. Perhaps they were extremely shallow. I should have casted some stickbaits, but ran out of time. I usually fish all night, but couldn't do so, had other things planned for today.

Those pleasure boaters didn't quit until well after 9:30 PM, and that alone screwed up one of the routes I wanted to troll. Oh well, what can you say? They have the right to use the lake anytime, but shouldn't be going full throttle either after dark. Some boats do not have lights, and this is an accident waiting to happen.

The best theory I have on the full moon is that plankton are light sensitive and rise at dusk and settle back into the depths during the day. When the full moon lights the surface it keeps the plankton deep and the herring stay deep with them. The full moon light also competes with the netters lights making them less effective with less herring coming into the nets so there is always a shortage of herring at the tackle shops during the full moon. My netting raft has a trap door in the center so I can put the light under the raft and shield the moon light. That works somewhat better but it is not easy to pull the net through the trap door.
Anyway, what this proves is you need to follow the bait.

GREAT REPORT Rob, and Squantos follow-up , gives Bob G. and i something to look at...We have been at Squantz at least once a week--last week twice...In our last 3 outing, going out around 7ish, we've caught at least 1 keeper eye trolling,,,But they all came before it got dark out..Usually by 9:30 we are anchored for alewives...We have caught a few eyes with slipfloats....But after we have enough alewives we move to an area where we marked fish earlier----and these areas are bare...Usually corresponding with this new moon, and being at its brightest after 11pm. The previous 2 yrs we noted getting skunked around the same moon phase...We'll have to pay more attention to the shallows {10' or less} and main basin area's...We also have noted resident regulars each nite joy riding, and one idiot without running lites...There were 2 guys fishing one nite out late, that you didn't pick up on till you were on them, and they just had flashlites..

TJV--Squantz Pond WAS my PLAY-GROUND for 16 yrs...Haven't found that sweet Florida fishin hole yet since i moved to Florida 10/1/07. ~~
PS~~Above animation avatar is me hooked into a 12FT. GATOR~~~~~

Nice report Robert.. I'm glad you hooked into a decent fish.. The lake I have been trolling i have noticed the same thing... The Herring went deeper and the Thermocline dropped a few feet...

Put in your time... and you will be rewarded....
