The other Hoop - 04/30/13 03:18 PM

How quickly things change. shocked

I was just having coffee this morning and getting ready to send my brother Jan (The other Hoop) pictures of the trout I caught yesterday when my cell rings. It is my daughter from Harwinton asking if anybody has called me yet. After just burying my wifes mother less than a month ago and my mother at 94 I asked "What happened to mom?"

Then the BOMB came!!!

My brother Jan was cutting a branch yesterday and it snapped, hit his ladder, and he hit the ground about 20 feet below. Don't know if the branch came down on him or what happene. He was taken to the hospital and transfered to Hartford hospital trama unit. The calls have been comming in all day keeping me updated. So far he broke all his ribs or at least broke both rib cages, has a colapsed lung, a ruptured spleen, a broken clavical, and durring the surgery to stop the internal bleeding the found he has CANCER in his kidney. He is not on a breathing machine at this time just oxygen and is having a very hard time breathing. He is not paralised.

I am booked solid till next Wednesday and there is nothing I can do for him but sit in the hospital so I will not be running up at this time. He will be in the trama unit for at least 5 more days unless something changes. I have put everybody (all my customers for the next 7 days) on notice that I may have to pull the plug and run at any given moment but for now it will be just contact by phone with the family. When you live 1700 miles away you have to suck it up and adjust.

Just wanted to vent and share a little. Wish my brother could bounce back as well as I but even though we are brothers I don't see that happening and his injuries are not looking good. Another bump in the road.

My heart and prayers are with you Jan!

Re: The other Hoop - 04/30/13 08:14 PM

Nothing life threatening at this time. Not out of the woods yet. Worried about staff and phneumonia at this point. If it weren't for the accident we would have not known about the cancer. So far only 1 kidney with it. Let's hope that is all.

Thanks for the comments.

Re: The other Hoop - 05/02/13 12:26 PM

Got an unexpected call last night. It was my brother and he sounded like nothing happened. He was able to talk to me for about 15 minutes. He may be released from the ICU trama center to a lesser trama area but it will be a long road to hoe from here on. He said "I may never be able to catch an amberjack again. Heck I can't even catch a johnny roach at this time."

One side is a lot worse than the other with every rib broken on that side and many in 2 places. He seems to be bouncing back in true Hooper fashion. He has proven he can fly but he still has to get the landings down a little better.

That was one hell of a bump in the road!!!!!

Thanks again for all the support and prayers.

Life is Good!

Re: The other Hoop - 05/04/13 08:36 AM

Glad he's getting better, Maybe it wasn't his time to go, and the accident may save his life, Finding the cancer!

I had a car accident and they found a broken bone C7 that I didn't know I had,(previous hunting accident)they had to do an MRI and found out I had thyroid cancer, by the time it was removed it was the size of a billiard ball... That accident may have saved my life!

Hope you two can get back out fishing together this summer!

Re: The other Hoop - 05/04/13 09:19 AM

Wow, just saw this. Best wishes to your brother!

Dang that's scary. The accident was bad enough, but hopefully finding the cancer is for the best.

Try to stay focussed. The fog can creep up on you.

Hopefully life will be good!

Re: The other Hoop - 05/05/13 12:55 AM

Unfortunately his only fish of the year was already caught. Glad I had a chance to post it on this site. If you can only get 1 trout per year make it an 8 plus pounder.

He has the Hooper fight and healing powers in him and things are going very well. He may be released from Hartford Hospital early next week. The healing at home will be several months. The cancer should be addressed in a few weeks. Hopefully it is only in one place and opening him up did not wake it up. He sounded good today but reassured me he is hurting bad.

Thanks again for the consern all.

Brother Jan called me today on his way home from Hartford hospital. He got out earlier than expected. His Cancer will be addressed in a week. He is healing surprisingly fast. Still can't see him out fishing for several months to come. At this time even a sunfish would hurt him.

Hoop,
Sorry to hear about your bother's accident.
Things happen for a reason (as bad as it may seem at the time).
I'm living proof that serendipity CAN save your life.
Good luck to your brother, and prayers sent.

Re: The other Hoop - 05/25/13 07:44 AM

UPDATE

His bones are healing well and they addressed his cancer a bit earlier than expected. It is not only (IN) his kidney but also growing out of his kidney and is threatening his lung. His bones are borderline healed enough to stand up for the 5 hour surgery. We will get the decision from the bone doctor on Tuesday. If he gives the OK things will happen fast to remove the cancer. Maybe as soon as Thursday. Let's hope the bones are healed enough to allow the surgery now.

Re: The other Hoop - 05/28/13 10:35 PM

The doctors cleared him for the operation today. He has to go in to sign some papers the 4th of June. From there they will get things set up and the operation will take place after that. It is a lot of time I would be spending up here and it does not make practical sense for me to be here all that time. I have done so much for my brother that he has run out of things for me to do. He is healing soooooo fast that I have confidence in his recovery.

I will be heading back home Thursday morning. Weather permitting I have a trip Saturday and Sunday. Should be in good shape for that after 26 hours of driving in 2 days.

Re: The other Hoop - 06/24/13 10:08 PM

Looks like the Hooper fight and luck runs in the family beerchug

My brother had his sugery today for his cancer and all went better than expected. Only a part of one kidney was removed and they are confident they got all the cancer. The doctor thinks he will not need any radiation or Kemo. It was all done roboticaly and in less time than expected. Looks like my brother and I have some more fishing time on order.

Talked to him today. He is in a very lot of pain. Meds are not helping. The amount of time he was on his injured side was just over 7 hours which did not help. On the mend!
