Posted by: Sebecsalmon
on: 43 minutes 12 seconds ago

Opened the Maine lake house on Sebec this past weekend. Fished for Landlocked Salmon as usual. The fishing was pretty good, caught 23 total for the weekend. Kept 4 for the smoker.

Vero Beach Florida Indian River

Posted by: Buck
on: 04/15/26 09:40 AM

Too bad snook have such a tight slot limit, they are great eating but remember to skin them after you filet them because I have been told that if you cook them with the skin on they taste "soapy". I have always skinned them so I have not had that problem and I can't confirm the soapy issue but I have heard it more than once. When the weather calms down and the wind subsides if you want to learn Sebastian Inlet I have a spot that produces mostly over-slot snook and reds. I had a YouTube station at one time and there is film of me and my friend Art on his boat out there and I caught an over-slot red that was huge and broke the net even pulling straight up.
There is also a very good flounder bite in the Fall when they school up to go offshore for the winter and again in the Spring when they come back in for the summer. Fish for the flounder starting on the West side of the bridge on an incoming tide and drift in towards the inter-coastal fishing the edges of the channel. Flounder follow the channels to get to their summer locations. Fish one pole in a pole holder "dead sticking" a fresh mullet strip bait on a tog jig just touching the bottom or a foot off of it and then cast to the channel sides and drag a second tog jig off the slope with a baited mullet strip bait. That is what we do up here in NSB when we target flounder which is not that often since we like the sheepshead bite better.
The bridge pilings have lots of nice sheepshead in the spring too so that is another option. If your tackle shops have fiddler crabs that is the best bait for sheepshead or go to the beach and rake up some sand fleas. There are some very good video segments on YouTube on how to spot sand flea colonies before you rake and then how to be stealthy in your approach so that the sand fleas don't "feel" you coming and dig into the sand below the rake level. Watch a few of these videos and you will be a sand flea expert. They are free and will catch whiting, pompano, mangrove snapper, black drum, redfish, and other species. Not good for trout and flounder and other bait fish feeders.
My friend from Melbourne Beach does the same thing by putting the fish in the live well before releasing so that the fish recovers and he can move away from the dolphin. I agree with the mangrove snapper as a number one eating fish. My problem is I can never catch anything over ten inches. Supposedly, they run better in the summer than now. Off shore they get rather large so these fish are in the Lagoon to simply stay alive and grow.
Have a safe trip back in May. I may try for walleye again in Zoar in early May. The herring are spawning and the walleye come shallow at dusk to feed on them in sandy or gravel bottom areas.
