Just be careful, most launch ramps will be very slick at times. Diesel was historically the cheaper fuel and it is one of the first derivatives to be produced at the refinery during the cracking process yet now it is much more expensive than gasoline.
Posted by: Buck
on: 09/11/26 11:53 PM

Mike, thanks for getting the issues in front of her. A big meeting like that is really tough to get any kind of detailed message through. Maybe in a week or so you can follow up to see if she favors any specific proposal over the others. Between you and Pete sending her my email she knows what we are asking for. What would be nice is if we could get some allies with us from the other members of the FAC. Bill Hyatt would be a good ally if he could get on board. Pete worked for him and all of his promotions were when Bill was Bureau Chief for the Bureau of Natural Resources so he and Pete I would think are pretty tight. Now we need to know what Ct. is going to propose to the Atlantic Coast Fisheries counsel.

Posted by: JMike
on: 08/29/26 10:18 PM

Mike, I remember Herman's well. It was the only store I was interested in going into when I got dragged to Westfarms Mall. Even bought a couple guns there! The other full service sporting goods store in West Hartford name slips my mind (long gone), was at Farmington and Prospect. True fishing and hunting stores. Today, well, the horrors of selling a gun in West Hartford, my goodness gracious me. Even Dick's got rid of all their hunting and shooting stuff in Canton. Gotta sell those soccer balls and football jerseys.

Menhaden Issues

Posted by: Buck
on: 08/25/26 09:42 AM

There are a lot of examples of lost species stocks and past blitzes that we enjoyed. Atlantic halibut were so plentiful when the pilgrims arrived that they were used for fertilizer too. They literally fished this species to death. Now an occasional halibut is caught on a party boat out fishing for cod but it is rare. The Fall blitzes in Montauk are not what they used to be nor the spring runs of yellow tail sea flounders and jumbo black-back flounders. In the 70s when I had a place out there I took a week of vacation time just to fish the migration blitzes in early October. Thousands upon thousands of sea gulls and other ocean birds hovering over the vast schools of bay anchovy, mullet, bunker, juvenile weakfish, spearing, sand eels, etc. with stripers and blues underneath pushing the shoals of bait up and out into the open ocean. I don't know that that happens anymore.
