Avid Alum boats in Salt water

Posted by: Paul D.
on: 04/21/26 03:52 PM

IMO if you can keep it in a lift/ trailer and rinse it inside and out every trip the Aluminum will be fine. If slipping , go with glass. I can't fully explain it here, but the brackish water (inlets, bays, river mouths, marshes) have a higher particulate count which makes the water more conductive thus a higher rate of ELECTROLYSIS. There are differing grades of Aluminum, some more resistant to corrosion than others. Lots to read on the interwebs on the subject so make an informed decision. I Run a small aluminum rig (have owned several) it sees salt and brackish water regularly. No corrosion damage on the current one as it gets a rinse every trip. Some of the previous boats did not get the same care and showed signs of corrosion, some minor , some major.
Can you put a lift in now that you have bought rather than renting?

update fixxing trim-- job gone bad

Posted by: mattmann7
on: 08/31/25 08:51 PM

You know its gone bad when after you pick up your tools you have to place yellow caution tape around the boat and rigging used to lift the motor. The damn auxillary screw that lets the pressure off the trim so you can manually lift, lower, and set the trim manually is cross threaded and will not budge. Next step is to remove the complete assembly to accsess the screw with control and replace the slotted version with a new allen screw. I pulled tools from 4 floors in the house, the truck and the stash that I keep in the boat. I applied heat and monitored it with a temp lazer. 3 hours and at least 8 different slotted screwdrivers and I conceded. I have a single section of scaffold being supported by 3 outrigger legs and a come--along strapped to the scaffold to raise the motor. I was informed by my GF that my project is R rated and I was cussing loud enough for the new neighbors to hear. They should be happy I dont drink and work on the boat. At last not in the last 20 years.

fixing tilt trim

Posted by: mattmann7
on: 08/30/25 08:14 AM

I need to look into how to do that. The pigtail on the tilt motor only has the 2 wires for the up and down. That was my first thought which lead me to checking the switches also. I had my booster all set up to run direct but lacked the proper technique. Thats first on my list along with searching for another inline fuse I may have missed before tearing the switches down. Thanks
