Cold crisp start to the morning. Wind was light and variable, John was setting up when I showed up.
We tried to find some crappies but they weren’t having it with the high pressure blue bird skies.
We searched, and found very small pods today. We tried several jigs and colors and tried to mix up the retrieves.
Best thing I found to do was, to not do much at all. Painfully slow retrieval.
I felt like more than half of whatever I got, was them sucking it off the bottom.
Not normal for sure.
Weird day, but good company fishing with John (skunkedalot). He made the right call on the weather forecast for sure.
The channel cat on 4lb. Was good way to stretch out some new mono.

I think at one point the state record crappie was from Saltonstall, before the current record.
For bass it was great when the lake opened, then something about killing the weeds put bass fishing in decline.
Then it got stocked with eyes. Fishing there IMHO, is tough and stingy.
Remember fishing some of the tin can tournaments there. It seemed more than half the field would come in with a goose egg. (this is 25 years back)

your fishing partner looks like the perfect type. doesn't take up a lot of room. not much of a complainer when things are slow. and, always ready to throw in a paw to help with unruly fish.

Launched yesterday to try for panfish. Had 7 nightcrawlers left from the dozen bought for the last trip. Arrived 6AM, getting ready. Another boat came, same guy as last trip. We discussed the weed treatment for hydrilla. He said there was no choice as hydrilla would completely choke the lake with weeds. As there was no point in fishing shorelines where weed treatments wiped out those fish I planned on doing drifts in deeper water there were no weeds. Targeted 20-28' depths with side scan to locate boulder fields where when present attract schools of mature bluegills.

Used the Garmin for downview sonar and side scan, the old Humminbird without transducer for lake map.



Most of the lake bottom was flat, and fish sonar returns were scarce. Drifts were very slow to begin so used trolling motor to move a bit periodically, later south breeze picked up. Below are sonar echoes of apparent bluegill school. There were much better views of bluegill schools but I was too busy fishing to take a picture.



This is an example of the boulder patches scattered here and there on the bottom I was targeting.



Most of the time there was no action interspersed with flurries of action when I encountered a school. Fished 630AM to 930AM when I used the last of the nightcrawlers. Catch was 12 bluegills kept for the table plus a yellow perch and smallmouth which were released.



I managed this trip with difficulty but I am not going to just sit on the couch because going out is difficult. Will pan fry the catch tonight.

Thank you for these very helpful tips. I guess fishing there is really a bait game which is not my most favorite way to fish. But if that is what it takes then when in Rome.......!
