The redfin pickerel found in Connecticut is a true species Esox americanus americanus, as is the grass pickerel Esox americanus vermiculatus, their natural ranges do not overlap.

Practice helps in differentiating between northern pike and chain pickerel. Simplest difference is pike have spots on fins, chain pickerel do not.
