Trailer axel

Posted by: Buck
on: 08/21/25 11:18 AM

I just did this project a few weeks ago on my 15' skiff I trailer to Florida. It was an EZ Loader and old enough that it used a 49" axle when for the last ten years they made this sized trailer with a 40" axle. I finally ended up speaking with 411 Marine Co. down in Hardeville SC. which promoted themselves as the largest EZ Loader dealer in the country. They scoured the national network of dealers and found three 49" axles in the country and had a new one sent to me. It had new hubs, new leaf springs, all of the hardware such as the hangers, etc. and the total bill was less than the best quote to have a customer made axle done up in my area of western Ct. and Eastern NY. I cut off the old stuff with a cut off tool for the really rusted stuff and got it cleaned up. Installed the new complex in a day with the help of a couple of guys who volunteer with me at the Great Hollow.
Depending upon your age I would recommend having a buddy help you. The good suggestions above should provide solutions for the parts but if at a dead end call the manufacturer and find out if they have the parts or who their biggest dealer is and where they are located.
When I am travelling back and forth to Florida on the I95 the most common reason for a boat/trailer rig to be parked on the side of the road disabled is:
1. Flat tire with no spare tire or changing equipment
2. Failed leaf springs
3. Broken axle at the hub junction
This stuff needs to be inspected every spring.

"Parasitic battery draw" question

Posted by: Eric D
on: 05/31/20 09:36 PM

I would guess anything under .050 MA is normal. At least on Hondas that's the norm. Make sure you are checking it correctly. Make sure you check it with the hood latch latched or hood latch switch unplugged if it has one. It may take several minutes for the car to go to sleep so to speak as control units shut down. I've seen lots of dead battery complaints lately with more cars not being used as much. There is almost always never a draw.

2008 Silverado 2500HD wheels & tires?

Posted by: WP
on: 05/29/20 09:22 PM

The quest is over.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately, none worked out. I learned a lot, though.

The closest was MikeV's bone yard suggestion. Bill's autoparts was very helpful and very easy to work with. Highly recommended. We located a set of 3 wheels in Maine, but couldn't find a 4th. Oh well.

So, I bit the bullet and bought a set of 17" MM Warrior wheels and 285/70-17E Toyo Open Country A/T3 tires from Town Fair Tire.

Stock wheel offset is 28mm and the new wheels are 18mm, but they do not extend outside my fenders, which was a concern. However, there may be something rubbing at full steering lock in reverse. We'll see.

Other than that, I'm very happy, so far.

Thanks, again.
