I'm looking for the massive thread on this Mike G started years ago. Mitch tucked it away somewhere.

Slow fishing is better than no fishing.

Do you agree with Bob Sampon's take that the Internet is to blame?

Outdoors: Opening day losing popularity

While I agree that the Internet is keeping some kids indoors, I believe a decrease in opening day participation is more complicated than simply blaming the Internet.

I think the most important factor is the parents. If there are less adults involved in fishing and getting their kids involved, then we will continue to see a decrease.

Also, there might be something to the quality and reach of DEP’s stocking efforts?

Opening Day is almost here. What are your thoughts?

Personally if I didn't work Saturdays I would hit a stream and fish, as that was a tradition we used to do. That would also depend on if they stocked the area I fish.

In this day and age kids are into video games and internet more than ever. It does start with the parents as when I was a kid my dad would take me out every year on opening day. I totally agree Mr. Mousie that it starts with the parents!

When I was a kid opening day was bigger to me than Christmas! I used to fish with my grandfather and fishing with him was great. He was a fantastic teacher and motivator and we did really well fishing the Saugituck river.

Even though I dont fish for trout much anymore, I still hit a river every year on opening day. It makes for some great laughs watching everyone fight over a spot to catch a trout. A cup of coffee and a couple of smokes are all I need to have a good time on opening day.

If the internet is to blame, and Al Gore invented the internet, then Al Gore is to blame.

Open day we usually hit a small stream near my house and have a family get together after at my house with the wifes after fishing. This year we lost a whole family to soccer and baseball but we pick up my 2 yr.old grandson and my nephew 5 yr.old daughter. So you see its not just the internet. First day of fishing has always been a tradition in my family.
