This rainy year has really put a damper on my smallmouth adventures to the river. Weeks of high, muddy water has finally receded to a wadeable level so I gave it a shot yesterday.
It took a while to find them but all I wanted was one. Finally had a tell tale thump but he missed it. I kept working that area over and finally caught what I came for! I continued to fan cast that area as I worked my way up river.
They made me work for them, but I managed to land 8 and lost 1 before I started to get cold and knew it was time to get out of the water and head home.
I caught all of them on a swimbait because that’s all I threw. Suspended floating grass made it tough to get a clean retrieve, but overall it was a fun trip.
I hope to get back before they migrate to their wintering holes.
