Anybody see the headline in the Day newspaper last Sunday? It takes 14.23 an hour to get buy in New London County, if you can live in a 1 bedroom apartment that is. I moved here from Key West because housing was a lot cheaper. Down there I could not afford an 1100 sq ft house ($600,000). Here I bought an 1800 sq ft home for $300,000. Now I'm moving to Montana where my 3000 sq ft home on 1 acre will cost me about $250,000. They do not have sales tax, and their energy cost about 1/3 less. Those facts alone will save me about 10K a year. But the most important reason I’m moving is that my mom & 3 brothers live there. I will surely miss the salt water fishing opportunities around here. I will miss the people I have met on this site too. I will not miss all the angry people that live here. I used to think the state was just full of jerks, but I have figured out that most of them are just mad and tired of getting ripped off by the government and energy companies. CT government needs to realize why all the middle class folks are leaving before they don’t have anyone left here to pay their outrageous taxes. For those of you that are happy here I hope you are able to stay that way. I’d like to wish everyone the best of luck in the upcoming season. I’d also like to say thanks to all those that took the time to share their tips and spots with me. I really enjoyed fishing in CT, but I won’t need a lot of my tackle in MT, so if you want a good deal on some used equipment go to J&B tackle in Niantic on the 7th for their tag sale.
Jon can you see me as a farmer? Guess I'll have to stay down here and spend all my money on gas getting up there. Looking forward to "the king" also this summer.
I love it here in Connectciut. 1.5 hours from 2 great cities. Very diverse fishing opportunities. Close to all the action, but only a couple hour ride to get away from it all. Tons of money to be made in CT, you just have to get off your lazy *** and go get it. I think the deciding factor for most people is the money issue. Lets have a little finance lesson. Cost of living goes up, Income goes up. Cost of living goes down, Income goes down. Connecticut has high taxes, so what. If state taxes are causing havoc on your finances then no matter where you go to live you are gonna just scrape by. There is no magic place where cost of living is way down and income is high, unless you plan on buying a home out in the boonies and travel to an area of higher income.

I live here because of my wife. She's was born and raised here and needs to stay close to her mother. I can respect that.
The pro's of this state are as many as the cons. I love the fishing, the "old New England" feel, you have the hills/mountains and the ocean within short distance, my job is a good one and I enjoy it.
If it weren't for living in this tax happy socialist state, I'd be even more happy. Simply put, remove the politics and corruption, and this is truly a great state to live in.
Jobs that my wife and I have been in 20 + years keep us here. Being raised as a Navy Brat and subjected to multiple moves and lost friends....I wouldn't subject my two boys to that...but when they are grown, we are out. Somewhere like NC or further south. Every once in awhile I dream of moving back to of all places, Guam.... (Read: I hate winter)
I live in Connecticut because in my profession I can make NYC-level salary and not pay NYC-level costs of living. I couldn't do that anywhere else, period.
I live in Connecticut because it's one of the few places in the country where you're close to many different surroundings, and can live in the woods and still be close to the culture of urban areas.
I live in Connecticut because I love the charm of old New England, especially the shoreline. I've been all around the country and it's still my favorite.
I live in Connecticut because I like to fish, I like to Golf, I like to Ski and I like the shore. I can get a little bit of each here.
My folks moved from PA to CT for family and work. I consider CT a great place to live and be an outdoorsman and I'm glad I was educated in CT public schools.
The cost of living is high no doubt but what really kills you is property taxes and other state taxes and fees. It could be hard to retire here in a large home in some towns.
The Carolinas, Florida and Texas have ridiculously low property taxes and home prices. I'm 43 so I've been formulating ideas for retirement and right now one idea I like is to buy a three family home in CT and rent out two floors to pay the mortgage and taxes and keep the 3rd floor as my CT summer home. Alternatively I might buy a tidy little cabin in upstate NY or Maine near a lake and some nice rivers and live there during the summer and rent it out to hunters, snowmobilers, skiiers etc...during the winter months when I'm not there.
To avoid the cold winters and dealing wtih snow when I'm older I'd buy a small home or cabin or cottage in North Carolina and keep a 20 foot fiberglass boat down there if I were near the shore. If you go on line and check out the listings in NC you can see how inexpensive homes and property taxes are.
I've been doing the research and right now anyone can easily buy a nice place in various parts of NC for around $70,000 to $85,000. Same is true in upstate NY or ME...you can buy a nice cabin on a small piece of land for under $100,000. So you can buy a place in the south and a place in the north for about what you'd pay to have one nice place in CT.
It's only 3.5 hours from upstate NY to CT if I want to visit with my family and hotel rooms are $85 bucks per night!!!!!!!
