Officers observed the fishing vessel Anne Kathryn offloading fish at a local fish dealer. The vessel was offloading monkfish, hake, squid, tilefish, butterfish and summer flounder (fluke). Summer flounder is a quota managed species with a current limit set at one thousand pounds per week. The vessel captain landed a total of 1158 pounds of fluke, 158 lbs over the legal landing limit. This vessel and captain have been warned in the past concerning landing limints of quota managed species. The vessel captain was charged with possession of summer flounder in excess of the current landing limit and given a court date at new London Superior court later that month. A total of 158 lbs of fluke were seized.
So if he was not checked by ENCONN the commercial fish buyer would have purchased those additional fish? Shouldn't the fish buyer have been fined also? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't like seeing or hearing draggers raping the ocean either, but 158#s over when netting seems reasonable....not like they were overfishing one by one with a rod and reel. I would rather see those 158#s sold/used vs kicked overboard dead. There should be some checks and balances....like next trip he needs to be 158#s under the limit, etc.....so at the end of the season he is within limits for the # of trips.
