I went to Rogers Lake in Old Lyme today and was surprised to see the lake level so low. I figured they lowered the lake for the winter & were waiting for it to rise. It was quite shallow near the launch making it difficult to get out to deeper water.
I was really surpised when I got down by the dam & the flood gates were open letting the water out.

Seeing this lake is a trophy trout lake shouldn't the flood gate be closed & the lake be up to full pool?

Thanks
Mud Man

I live there and this is an OUTRAGE. They said back in NOVEMBER that it would be a WINTER drawdown to freeze out the weeds. They said it would be drawn down 18". They have kept the gate open all winter and in December it was drawn down over 30"!!. The rain last week filled it up to basically full pool but they opened the gate ALL THE WAY AGAIN and in 3 days I had BEACH in front of my house where it is normally 2 ft deep. Some "WINTER" drawdown. I have contacted DEP about this but they said that the Lake Assn. controlled the dam and therefore they have no control over the matter. I find this totally outrageous, especially since all of the fish the state stocks and manages will go down that pipe and out of the lake if this keeps up. It also destroys the shallow-water nearshore and littoral zone habitats.

Can you contact the association to see why the lake is low?

Thanks

They have made a statement that it was an "18" drawdown for winter." They claim it is to "freeze out the weeds," but it doesn't really work and there is no more freezing going on, yet they are still dumping the lake full bore. In Dec. it was drawn down more that 30" and they dropped it more than 2 feet in 3 days after this last rain.

Valinn Draining down for a good freeze DOES WORK WELL . It will kill off the weeds . Wish they would do a few of the lakes in my area Two of them you can not even use after the month of July they are so choked up .

Perhaps you can contact the towns inland wetlands agency and see if they had to receive a permit to do the drawdown. (Likely) If you can veiw a copy of the permit, it may contain language that dictates conditions of the drawdown. Nothing wrong with checking into the details.

What I am saying is there IS NO MORE ICE and NO MORE FREEZING, yet they drew it down from full pool a week ago (the ice had already gone out) and now it is back down to the low level it was all winter. If the purpose was to freeze the weeds out, fine, but please let it go back to normal level now that the ice is gone.

I e-mailed the town of Old Lyme & the DEP, I'm waiting for a responce from both.

I put this question on to the forum hoping to hear from the DEP.
Will the DEP respond on this sight?

Thanks Mud Man. I don't know if they will respond on the site, but you can give it a try.
