this is kind of ironic that the guy who attempts to be as ethical and law abiding as possible and tries to tell people who fish with him not to break the law will get a ticket because of a mistake without even getting a warning on a first offense. This is exactly what happened to me yesterday when fishing at Branford supply ponds. Did not know that it was supposed to get trout stocked and was closed nor did I know it was even in the book... I was out there once before and saw a couple of guys fishing and thought to give it a shot sometime. so I made the mistake of not looking in the book before going fishing there. I was not even fishing for trout and had no clue there were trout in there. Hell, I even told the officer when she asked me "do you fish here often" that I usually fish at saltonstall but it is closed until opening day so I came out here to try. This is before she told me Branford supply pond was closed because of trout. If I was planning on poaching, i would have gone out and poached on saltonstall where I probably would never get caught and probably would walk away with walleye’s, bass, trout and crappies. So, a buffet of poached fish, instead of just trout which would have been much more exciting. I don’t poach however and I did not have any fish on me as I try to practice cpr and do my share of trying to conserve resources. All of this to me, when there are people out there without a license filling buckets of illegal size and type fish all day long upon who I have called several times to DEP in order to try and help them enforce laws. Anyways, i am going to try and plead not guilty to see if there is a chance that they will let me get away considering this is my first offense, but i am concerned that if they do convict me regardless what are the chances of me loosing my fishing and hunting license?
Good luck in court, Vega. Have the 2010 books come out on 4/1 as promised. Maybe you didn't know the story because CT was very late getting the DEP book out. Tightlines.

That sucks. I am originally from PA and it was confusing at first as to what was open and fishable and what was not. I had vacation the 2nd week of Apr. my first year here and almost went to Macedonia on a picnic and to fish. If I hadn't checked the book I would have definately been screwed. If the book isn't out then you may have a very legitimate defense, although I suspect that the response will be something like ignorance is not innocence.

I made the mistake of not keeping my 2009 book, figuring I'd pick up a new one in jan when I renewed for ice fishing. Who new the state would decide to publish the rules book in April. Even though it's online, with so many different regulations for different lakes, I don't think it's fair to ticket someone before the rules book is printed.

Really appreciate your help and support everybody. the funny thing is the officer did not have a book with her either . I asked her if she had one and she goes to check and says no she does not. Anyway, although i am hoping they will give me a break this time, i will pay my fine if i am told to. what i am afraid of is any action to cancel my license. Does anybody know what are the chances of that happening and what can i do to avoid such situation? thank you once again for your help and support.

From what I understand(from a freind) because this happen to him last year. If you pay the tickect you are saying your guilty and your licence will be suspened. You must send in "Not Guilty" and you will get a trial date. My freind sent his tickect in and a few weeks later got the bad news and he had to fight it to get reinstated.

Wow, thats pretty sucky. I don't see why CT decided to take this long to get this freaking book out. You pretty much got a ticket for something THEY did wrong.
