After seeing one of those men fishing by throwing line with hook and worm by hand and having no fishing license today, I'd say the DEP should come up with a law that if you want to fish, you must be using rod and reel to catch fish (does not include shellfish). I've also seen many with line tied around wooden sticks and branches. Something that would be nice about that law is there wouldn't be as many poachers and people with no license. I've seen many people at Seaside Park in Bridgeport fishing with chunks who don't have any sort of rod and reel setup while fishing.

If bluefish were to grow as big as giant bluefins, then there would be nothing left out there except for blues!

Mike, am I missing something here? What is wrong with fishing with a line and a hook. When I was a small kid I use to fish with a line and a hook tied to a stick. The licence thing I agree but whats up with the stick and a line thing?

Michael, The hand line thing might be because they cannot afford better equipment. That is the way they fish in poorer countries.

It could also be a way to avoid detection when poaching, but it seems less likely. If they can't afford a fishing rod and reel, they may not be able to afford the license.

I took his thread to mean something totally different....so I'll ask.

If you're using a cane pole in CT for fishing, does it require a license? I'm pretty sure in some states (Florida for one) cane pole fishing does not trigger a requirement for a license so you'll always see loads of people lining canal banks with cane poles.

My first fishing pole was a short piece of line tied to a stick my grandfather gave me to use on a camping trip to the Salmon River when I was 4.I remember camping near an old hospital or something on the river.

Moved to Florida when I was 9 and learned to catch bream from the local canals on a $3 cane pole and for the $3 it also included ,line, hooks, and a bobber. "one of those men" taught me how to use it.He also taught me how to avoid gators and moccasins.Good times.............

I would think "fishing" is fishing, and ya need a license. The act of trying to catch a fish. End of story!
fishing with a hand line, and no license is poaching !

Some poacher's in the spring use short blocks of wood with a nail in it and 20 feet of line, a sinker and hook with a peace of nightcrawler. They cast the line out and then bury the block under the bank at night and return the next night to pull in their catch. I know because I've caught trout on opening day that were attached to such rigs on the Naugatuck river set by someone other than myself.

Poachers will poach, we just have to try to be vigalent, and report them if & when we see them. The laws are on the books, shoot, too many, it is virtually impossible to enforce them all. We all drive the speed limit don't we.
