A few years back my son and I were fishing a breachway in RI and there was 2 fellow there that were fishing with bait and all they had was coke soda cans with line attached to it and they could really cast quite a distance with it. It was like using a open face spinning reel.

Handlines are listed as a legal method under Angling in the definitions section of the CT DEP Fishing Guide.
"AN GLIN G Fishing with hook and line, which must be personally attended. No more than two lines, with or without rods, may be used at one time. Each line may have any combination of hooks, flies or lures, of which a maximum of three hooks may be baited."

Fishing license = tax. Hunting license = tax. CT duck stamp " now Migratory Game hunting "permit" = tax, HIP permit original $2.00 admin fee, now $4.00 = tax. Where will it end! Enough is enough! I can not get out of this state quick enough!!!!!!!!

Mike the dep has bigger fish to fry than a guy fishing with a handline.Be careful when you approach people that are fishing and ask them if they have a license, let the proper authorities handle that you might ask the wrong person and youll be wearing their hanline around your neck. Theres nothing wrong with reporting suspicious activity but you have to pick your battles a guy catching stunned sunnies on a handline so he can eat or someone keeping hundreds of underzised stripers to make easy money.

I was handlining ( bobbing) the other day in a stream . Its great fun and actually a riot. I've caught some nice brookies doing it over the years in some "tough to cast holes". nothing wrong it to my knowledge. I've seen people use empty ( or half full)beer bottles with line wrapped around it. Theres no law that says you need a rod and reel.
Live and let live man.. Pick your battles !!!
some guy handlining for sunnies so he can fry some up. it not something that i would waste ENCON's time with.
fishing is like life.. you learn as you go.and I can't stop learning

Michael - Now that you've been properly "bashed", let me add that I understand your frustration. You have shelled out all this $$$ to comply with CT licensing requirements, you play by the rules and it irks you to see people who ignore them and consistently get away with it. When I was a little fisherguy (just after the earth's crust cooled), my Dad taught my brother and I to fish with a handline before he got us rods and reels. The folks fishing with handlines are not breaking the law by fishing that way, although many may not have licenses. This thread had some great advice - do not approach people and ask if they have licenses, if you see something call the TIP line - try and shrug your shoulders and enjoy life despite the jerks you meet along the way, life's too short to let someone ruin your day. Be grateful that you live in the U.S. (OK, maybe not so grateful that you live in CT.. then again, they don't have blues everywhere!) Tight lines and GBAATTWDH

Mike I remember use-in hand lines to fish with. They work for us back in the 50s spark plugs for sinkers hooks come in metal cans, and we turned drift wood logs boards to get our bait..A tackle box was your pockets worked great. I have used cane poles to catch snapper blues I still do now some times. Boy have times changed.Try fishing with a hand line. Call D E P and let them enforce the law its safe.70 yrs old.
