I am a certified crossbow hunter. After hunting with a crossbow let me tell you from experance that it's not as effective as most people believe it is. You still have to know the distance to your target and I would not shoot at a deer over 40 yards out. They are much harder to shoot a good group with than a strong person with a good compound if you are shooting the crossbow offhand. I always try to shoot off of shooting sticks or brace my elbows on my knees. The only 2 advantages I can see is that the bow is already cocked so there is no movement to draw which is when most deer catch the movement and you don't have to practice as much. But like any hunting implement gun or bow I still practice often and all year long. The big disadvantage is they are very noisy and an alert deer at 30 or more yards will jump the string.
No movement to shoot a deer alone will result in more shot opportunities for 99% of crossbow users.
Personally, if I was able to hunt with a crossbow, I would own a ghille suit and would hunt from the ground. So many places that I would love to hunt with my bow but are near impossible to set up on because of movement.
Granted, a crossbow doesn't give you an effective range of a gun but it offers up huge advantages over a compound that would make hunting much easier and/or offer up more opportunities to get on animals.

I have a 175# Parker Buckbuster and it's the only one I have shot. It was a gift from the GF. I think my next one will be a Excabibar Pheonix. Lighter and less moving parts plus you can uncock it without shooting it. From the forums I have read there are a lot of breakdown issues with some crossbows. Most archery shops aroud here aren't prepared to fix them and get you back in the woods right away. Excalibar bows seam to be very reliable. 405 fps sounds good but that's measured right off the bow. Remember that crossbow bolts loose speed a lot faster that a carbon arrow from a compound. I would love to check the speed of that bolt verses a 28 inch carbon arrow with a 100 grain muzzy shot from a Mathew's at 30 yards.

Personally I have no problem with crossbows. Dont see what the big fuss is about. More people more tags more $$$ to "General Fund".

You can say anything foolish to a dog, and that dog will still give you a look that says, "WOW!! What a great idea!! I never would have thought of that!!"
Some people are born on third base, then spend the rest of their lives thinking they hit a triple.

I am thinking of getting back into bow hunting and applying for a waiver. I had rotator cuff problems and it was healed with physical therapy. I don't want that issue again and will be trying out a crossbow to determine if it is right for me. Otherwise, I will just spend more time scouting and hiking in the woods. A friend has a waiver due to early onset Parkinson's and for him it gets him out in the woods enjoying the surroundings as well as the hunt while he can still do it. Dave's Dad
