Had a question about access to sandy brook... Just past the third bridge on the the brook side there is a bunch of fishing signs and parking spots roughly 10 feet from the the brook. The question is if it is legal to fish there as there is a bunch of posted signs between the road and brook. The only reason i ask is because i don't see how anyone one can possibly own that 10 foot wide stretch of land between the brook and road. Thanks for the help!

The residents of Colebrook think they own the river. I know because I used to live in Town on river bank property. Go to town hall and ask to look at the property maps. You will be amazed at what people post that is actually state or town property. Don't be afraid to wade the river because it's all navigable water way and I've never seen on the map that anyone has mineral rights to the stream bottom.

Thanks for the response danny. I'm not trying to get in a battle over this little brook but its kinda funny when the salmon/trout fishing signs are posted and 3 feet away there is a posted sign between the road and the brook. Last i checked the state owned a certain amount of feet in beside every road.

Even if they own the property in between the road and the water, you can enter at any bridge crossing.

Best to check the land records if you can (and carry a copy in case local law enforcement has a question).

It's amazing the amount of land that is illegally posted. What's it cost for someone to throw up a half dozen hardware store bought signs. THE ABSOLUTE NUMBER ONE REASON for land being closed to fishing is LITTERING!!!
