Like Jon said, early season fluking, they were thick like this ALL DAY LONG.
Mark, I don't think that photo is a Spiney Dogfish.
I suspect that is a Smooth Dogfish - Mustelus canis The Spiny Dogfish Shark - Squalus acanthias is a little different.
There are subtle (but really important) differences. "Sand Sharks" like in the photo do not have those subtle spots along the back or that NASTY spike near the tail that can give you a bad punture wound when held causually.
