Officer Caulfield told the fisherman, "You can't be within 100 feet of his dock."

Lake Zoar Patrol article

I've never heard of this "rule". Is the officer correct?

OBASS should weigh in on this. As I recall, he checked with the DEP at one time on the issue and posted the response.
My recollection is that a designated swiming area, one posted by a red buoy, dictated that a boat could not be within 100 ft of the area.

An excess of opinion resides at the juncture of not knowing what you dont know.

With the details included in the story, the officer was absolutly wrong in his ruling.

When you guys cast into a dock and get snagged to you retrieve the lure?

I can see me going for a swim and climbing my dock only to get a treble hook in me. I would not be a happer camper!

I already took care of it. There is no law or regulation on the books that tells you how far you need to be from a dock. You're still responsible if you damage a dock, boat or boat cover with your lure.

The 100 foot limit is for waterskiing. You can't fish in a permitted swim area.

Everyone I fish will retrieve their bait, though a proficient caster will rarely hook a dock or boat. But, if it does happen we attempt to retrieve the bait without touching anything so as to avoid any tresspassing ordeal. Though I would hope most property owners would rather me breifly grab hold their dock rather than leaving a hook behind.

I was fishing next to the swim area at New Fairfield town beach, between the swim area and town docks. The lifeguard got on the bull horn and said I had to be at least 200 feet away!
