The stinger is longer than a .22lr - so I'm confused because that would mean the .17hmr2 would be illegal too if that is the line of thinking.....
Makes no sense and will be interesting to hear the response - especially considering its NEVER been called out that way or enforced face to face that I've ever heard of

The only rifles allowed on state land for small game hunting is .17hmr (rimfire) and .22 long rifle. .22 magnum is not allowed. The use of centerfire rifles is prohibited on state land. You can use also use muzzleloaders up to 36 caliber for small game.
Shotguns are limited to shot that is smaller/lighter than #2 shot.
You can check out the regulation here:

The language of the regulation was also changed so that it now reads no longer than a .22lr or heavier than 20 gr. The reason for that was to make the .17hmr legal for use. I don't know if anyone makes a pistol in that caliber yet, but if they do then you can see in the regulation where it will be allowed. On state owned land yes, on leased land no. If the permit required area is state owned then you can use the pistol. If leased then you can not.
You can also use a .17hmr pistol (if they make them yet) as the .17hmr is allowed anywhere a .22 rimfire is.
