Found the link that states Atlantic shad is closed to all waters except the Ct. River can you explain why? Does this include inland waters as this is the marine table? I fish the Farmington for Shad and would like to know. http://www.ct.gov/deep/cwp/view.asp?a=2696&q=322740&deepNav_GID=1647
These are all tributaries of the CT River. The Farmington is part of the CT River system as the reg states you are fine....
Black Hall River (Old Lyme, CT) Falls River (Essex, CT) Eightmile River (Hamburg, CT) Deep River (Deep River, CT) Salmon River (Moodus, CT) Mattabesset River (Middletown, CT) Hockanum River (East Hartford and Hartford, CT) Park River (Hartford, CT) Farmington River (Windsor, CT) Scantic River (South Windsor, CT)

I haven't seen the regulation yet. As soon as I get a copy and can read it I'll update.
As to why, I don't have any input into those decisions. They are made by the Fisheries Division. You can contact the directly if you would like additional information as to why they changed that regulation.

Encon,
I'd like any clarification you might shed on the new Shad regs. We're hitting the Farmington River behind Bart's and finding some success; see my thread in the "Free-for-All" section. The question has come up several times over the last two nights: does the closure exclude the Connecticut River alone or does it except the Connecticut River AND its tributaries, e.g.: the Farmington, Scantic, et c.?
I mostly catch and release but I do like to take a few home each year. And it's just sad to "release" a shad that has swallowed a leaf and is bleeding from the gills like a stuck pig as it's landed. Fortunately I haven't faced that scene this year--yet...
Thank you for your time and invaluable contributions to this forum. I especially like the monthly highlights. :-D

Here’s how the notice was worded:
American shad: American shad may only be harvested from the Connecticut River system, the southern boundary of which is a line extending between Griswold Point in Old Lyme and the outer light on the Old Saybrook breakwater. American shad fishing in all other waters is limited to catch and release only;
We are interpreting that as including the CT river tributaries such as the Farmington river (same population).

Thank you for the clarification, Cap't! That's how I read the regulation but I've been known to be wrong before. Heading out for a little while before work this morning. Shad...
