I have a question about youth hunting. It says that between ages 12 and 15 they must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older with valid permit. My son is 17 has his hunting license is he ok if he goes pheasant hunting without an adult? Next question is what is the law for him to have a shot gun in his truck while his is going from home to the hunting area.I tried searching the sights but cant get a good answer. Thanks

Once he turns 16 he can hunt on his own.

Shotgun unloaded in the trunk or locked container while driving to and from hunting is legal.

Sec. 53-205. Loaded shotguns, rifles and muzzleloaders prohibited in vehicles and snowmobiles. (a) No person shall carry or possess in any vehicle or snowmobile any shotgun, rifle or muzzleloader of any gauge or caliber while such shotgun, rifle or muzzleloader contains in the barrel, chamber or magazine any loaded shell or cartridge capable of being discharged or when such muzzleloader has a percussion cap in place or when the powder pan of a flintlock contains powder. As used in this subsection, "muzzleloader" means a rifle or shotgun that is incapable of firing a self-contained cartridge and must be loaded at the muzzle end.

(b) The enforcement officers of the Department of Environmental Protection are empowered to enforce this section.

(c) The provisions of this section shall not apply to members of the military departments of the government or state while on duty or while traveling to or from assignments, or to enforcement officers, security guards or other persons employed to protect public or private property while in the performance of such duties.

(d) Any person who violates any provision of this section shall be fined not less than ten dollars or more than one hundred dollars or imprisoned not more than thirty days or be both fined and imprisoned.

I thought the gun just had to be unloaded? Are you sure about the trunk or locked container?????

Technically under state law, unloaded is the requirement unless it's an assault weapon then it has the added requirement about being in the trunk or locked.

There are so many questions/problems/misunderstandings with the new gun laws, all answers I give will if anything err on the side of caution. If the gun is unloaded and either in the trunk or a locked gun case you are exceeding the requirements of 53-205. Personally I would rather do that than run across a police officer who may either not fully understand the law or misinterpret the law and get arrested (even though it would probably get thrown out of court)and have to go through the whole hassle.

If you want to run around with your rifle and shotgun hanging on the rifle rack in the back of your truck have at it. My personal opinion is be a responsible gun owner, don't leave a gun exposed where it may get stolen, don't carry it in a location where an officer making a routine traffic stop can see it and have things go south from there.

Under federal law they are very specific - for interstate transport - about ammo location, etc.

18 USC § 926A - Interstate transportation of firearms

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

Appreciate the insite. Personally, I have a quad cab truck. Typically I have my shotgun in a soft case with my vest and ammo laying on the floor in the back. I always thought that was legal as long as it was not loaded since I had a hunting license.

How does having a concealed weapon permit play in to this? I mean my hand gun can be loaded in the vehicle?

Where the heck does it sat that?

What is the point of a carry permit if it can't be loaded in the car?

Reelin this is in the new law the 1 year min jail sentence scares me.

Carrying Handguns in Motor Vehicles. By law, when handguns are being transported in a
motor vehicle, they must be unloaded and kept in a place (1) not readily or directly accessible
from the passenger compartment or (2) locked container other than the glove compartment or
console. A violation carries a penalty of one to five years imprisonment, a fine of up to $1,000,
or both, with a mandatory minimum one-year sentence in the absence of mitigating
circumstances. Any handgun found in the violator's possession must be forfeited (CGS §§ 29-
35 and 29-37).

I have always thought that if it was on your person it was legal but that is not what the new law states, hope encon can shed some light. Driving a pick up I have always locked my pistol in the glove box, crazy that this is now illegal.
