Is it legal to only have the PDF of your fishing license on your Smart Phones, instead of having a printout or do we need to have a printed copy? I was thinking about this today when I realized that my printer is out of ink but I can download the PDF to my phone.

I was checked last fall for the same reason, had the pdf downloaded from my e-mail on my phone, when I showed the Deep Officer he claimed it wasn't valid due to being unsigned~

and then what happened? Did he ticket you for not having a valid license, or just tell you it wasn't technically valid?
If you chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one.

No, he started questioning Den in Spanish. That was funny stuff!!!
Hey, when one is fishing in Hartford what'd ya expect, Czechoslovakian?
No ticket, nice enough just to inform me that only a signed license was valid, looked at the issue date and ID# and checked my drivers license. I ended up printing out about 10 copies afterwards.

I don't see why not, after all, it's validated after you've signed it, all the info is there along with the bar-code if needed to be scanned. Better than the pos slip that the licensing agents spit out.

This is a case of technology outpacing statutes and regulations. This question came up last year and I ran it up the chain of command for formal action. Right now we're not too concerned about it if someone has their license on their smartphone. It's gotten to the point with these phones where you can board an airplane after being groped by TSA with just a ticket on a smartphone.
The statute is worded that you must carry the license as designated by the commissioner. I ran it up the chain again asking if the Commissioner can issue a ruling that an electronic version would be acceptable and that should cover it. I'll let you know how I make out.
