They have been everywhere else, without much evidence to show a detrimental effect on any fishery I've seen. Why would cwood be different guys? I can't see why. Champlain fishery is robust. Even twin has excellent bass pop, and alewifes are plentiful.

Huh??? Twins bass population is way down from where it was when the lake had milfoil. And, as to the alewife population in Twin, it is virtually gone.

With the CLA moving forward on stocking triploid grass carp and the Zebra mussels getting in, your likely to see an alewive crash there also. Lose the alewive and the smallie population will follow.

Fortunatly for us, it seems that the zebra mussels must have a minimum amount of calcium in the water to take hold and, not all are lakes are capable of sustaining them.

Was thinking the same thing......Cwood is under too much pressure every year

The biggest concentration was on the rock point coming out of the canal. No surprise there. South of that area they weren't nearly as concentrated.

JON,

i saw TONS of alewife in my only trip there this season. at least in east twin. massive clouds on the finder, and visably seen in the shallows.

zebra mussels have had over 6 years to infest these waters. it hasnt happened yet. why havent they exploded?

perhaps something about candlewood isnt extreemly condusive to thier presence? why dont pike establish themselves, or the pickerel? ive seen/landed both, but they have no fishable population whatsoever. both get sucked in through the housy...

additionally, zebra mussels provide a HUGE food source for crayfish. an increase in crayfish could offset the population reduction of alewifes, if there is one.

not saying they wont have some of an impact, but IMO the sky isnt falling just yet. with the amount of boats running candlewood, and bringing in those things, the place should be infested with them. in fact every lake in the state should be! JUST MY BOAT ALONE!

So it looks like they are getting sucked up from the Housy. Vary few Pike do though, years back we caught a 39 incher by the dam, and there has maybe been 2 or 3 other cases I know. Candlewood used to be THE BEST pikeral lake in the state. We would troll for trout and hammer them and always caught a mess on tip ups. The deep draw downs ended that and now there are basically none.

I have talked until I am blue in the face about pressure and so many boats coming in and that it really needs to be regulated. In tournaments people sign that they cleaned off there boats, yeah OK that will work, not!!!! But it is at least a small effort. What about all the boats that recreation people launch and are clueless about them. Oh yes there are those legal size papers saying make sure your boat is cleaned off before launching, again no way is that happening.

This is just another reason you will see Candlewood fall way down as a good and constant fishery it is. We will be saying "remember when........" Hopefully I am wrong but I doubt it!

Luckily, the CT water bodies that have the right calcium concentration are limited. I'm sure it is just a matter of time before they all will be infested. Only time will tell what the negative effects will be. banghead

Twin, the Hous chain...Cwood, Lili, Zoar, Lake Hous

Ball Pond, Batterson Park Pond, Beseck Lake, Hatch Pond, Mudge Pond, Silver Lake, Squantz Pond, Lake Wononskopomuc.

And quite honestly I have seen a few here and there going at least 10 years back so they have been in there for a while.

i appreciate that thought chris. its a large reason ive not been concerned with the lake having mussels as a problem.

Yeah but I have only seen a few here and there. I just hope they don't show up more. We are always hanging at our beach in the winter and I haven't seen any in this area. This year they did a minimal drawdown so I can't say for sure if they aren't down here this year. I have seen them as far south as holywile cove but mainly up by the dam.
