My two cents-
If a person truly didn't know they were trespassing they would politely apologize, explain there route of access and immediately turn and leave.
I have personally been tracking a poor bow shot on a deer and found myself on private land without any idea I even left the state forest.
Stumbled on the owner and I did as described above. He followed me out and I showed him were my stand was on state land and the blood trail. Once he believed the story he helped me track and retrieve the animal on his property.
Uncomfortable yes, professional and manageable, yes.
I am only telling you this as one can get angrier and angrier and every case may be a little different.
Good luck.

I totally agree with everything your saying with every situation being different. However not once did this guy offer an apology or say it was a mistake. He went on to tell me that it's basically our fault he walked past all the signs for multiple years and he was well aware he was trespassing. Not to mention the unleashed pitbull mix(not to single out pits) he had running around. If he said those two special words " I'm sorry" I would have understood that is was a "mistake"and had no problem. But the fact that he stated that he walks in here all time tells me he does not give a sh*t about the posted signs or trespassing. This is where my major problm lays.

Come track a shot deer through here any time you would like I have zero problems with that. I do have a problem with pompous a-holes that wanna make their own rules and think that what is mine is his and that I should have no issues with him tromping through here taking nature strolls with his dogs.

Dont get my intentions wrong, I would be more than willing to help a lost person or someone tracking a deer that crossed the property line, those situations are totally different . This guy was a total noodle head and put a very bad taste in my mouth that day just by the total disregard he had for us and the property.
But anyways I actually live in east Hampton but we have property in colchester down along salmon. There are some real nice spots out your way down miles and in the state forest there. How have you done this season?

This year no luck in Babcock and no sign - a developer is logging a private lot adjacent to the state land and I believe that has something to do with it. I went to an area of Patchaug I have hunted since I was a young boy and pulled a nice three out on opening day- looking forward to going back during black powder.
Good luck!

State land is public and you have to deal with the public. Anyone can go anywhere they like.

Private land is PRIVATE! Anyone trespassing should be confronted and set straight. If they don't agree, want to argue or don't move on, then they get ARRESTED FOR TRESPASSING. Simple.
My landowners give me full permission to confront trespassers.

I deal with trespassers at all my private property. I'm very nice at first until one of them gets an attitude. Then it's on!
It's amazing how ignorant some people can be. The excuses are mind-boggling.

I have game warden and local police numbers in my speed dial. I'm tired of idiots.

Keep it tight and shoot straight.

These are the same people against Sunday hunting. Just amazing sometimes. I used to for years hunt private land next to Salmon river state land. All the deer would pile into the swamp on private and the hunters would follow. One opening morning three of us got bucks at the crack of dawn and the warden was under my stand by 6:30 in full orange with gun. Wanted us at truck in 1/2 hr. The last guy out says he saw someone standing over my buck. 8pt. Warden saw me tag it. We walked back in and the guy has got it gutted and tagged dragging it on state land. He argues like hell it is his deer until I opened the mouth and showed him my tag. Should have seen his face when he got his gun taken from him and a list of tickets. Next year it happen again. We called the warden and same one came. Took that buck out of the guys truck in parking lot. That is why we used to pierce the tongue and stuff tag in. Lost a few on long drags.

I can certainly understand your frustration. As we do patrol the airline trail, I would suggest calling your local PD first. Usually the only time we would get involved with a trespassing issue is if someone was hunting/fishing on your property w/o your permission or hunter harassment. We love those calls. If this now becomes repetitive with the same people who now know you are trying to hunt, give us a call and we'll send an officer out. I always try to tell people to be careful approaching and addressing your frustration, you never know what may happen. We as sportsmen have to preserve what little we have in this state. If you can get a plate number from their vehicle or description of the person(s) it would be helpful. They won't like law enforcement showing up at their house to address the issue. It sounds like you have enough signage, just arrogant people. Hopefully they got the message to keep out. Good luck.
