I was wondering if there is anything I can do. Piece of property came for sale behind me I tried to purchase it but somebody else got it. I have talked to the new land owner and seems like a nice kid. But he stated that he is a pistol instructor and bought it for a place to go shooting. It is a 35 acre parcel. Im not opposed to guns in any way but I didn't buy my house in the woods to be near a shooting range. Sometime I have to listen to it for 3 hours at a clip. Is there anything that I could do to stop this? And not to mention he drives his Polaris ranger about 6 miles on the road to get there. Is this o.k. to have this thing loaded with ammo and guns to be traveling on the road?
My knowledge as a layman would be most laws governing this are on the municipal level and hunting and target shooting are two different venues. In short, you might have some legal ground to curtail some of his use of of HIS land and you might start a turf war that no one wins. Research your legal status so you know what ground you have to stand on and speak with him and explain your position as a neighbor and would be friend. The old axiom of catching more flies with honey than vinegar comes to mind in a situation like this. Remember that this is all new to him and over the years I have witnessed people come and go and things change as the new novelty wears off. Your legal standing on this will lend to your bargaining power but keep in mind the above mentioned axiom even if the law is on your side. You might be able to stop or curtail the shooting but an off-road atv and dirtbike track might not be so attractive either....As far as the use of roadways by an atv, to my knowledge that is illegal-stop that and I'm sure he has a car...Carrying an unloaded long gun on an atv is legal as far as I know but enconn PD or CSPD would have the final say. Good luck, too bad you didn't purchase the property but like I said, things change maybe it will come back up for sale. Where are you located if I might ask???
Barkhamsted. I was hoping to hear from Econ. Hear what you are saying. Its just real annoying 2 -3 times a week. He wouldn't be able to get to his property by car its on a right away that's only passable by truck or something like a atv.I belong to a gun club to do my shooting, like my relationship with my neighbors. Have talked to a few of them and nobody is to happy. We are all in the same boat nobody wants to start a war.
what type of ROW? If its a utility ROW - you aren't supposed to be riding ATVs on them and the owner (Eversource and/or gas company) would not support that. In addition, if you called them and complained that people are using their ROWs for access - they may be willing to go up and post it etc. but I'm not sure that helps you too much.
As long as the owner of the property is doing everything by the books, I don't think there is much you can do as an abutter.

I know you are waiting for an official response but here is my input.
1. Shooting on your own property is not against the state law. There may be certain town ordinances but not state laws. 2. Driving the UTV on the road is against the law, but if he does not drive that then he will drive a vehicle down there and or park a trailer on the side of the road unload the UTV then go into the woods.
The really only shot you have is if he is running pistol courses and charging people to take the course and then shooting he may now have a "shooting range" that would have to have some safety measures put into place. Which may be to costly for someone to do who is just doing this part time.
When ever you deal with him be polite and talk nice never reveal what you are doing about investigating this, I probably would not even tell the neighbors until you have rock solid info.
Hope you get an answer and sometimes it's not always the one you want.
We all want our freedom and want to be able to do what we want on our own land and sometimes that means having to deal with others doing the same.
LOL If it was in your back yard you would feel the same way.I didn't buy a house in the middle of no where to listen to that all day.Go to a gun range like I do.
You might not like it, but Aar684 is right. The guy bought land - maybe for this specific reason.
I've had landowners call he cops on me and bitch about me hunting certain parcels because they don't like it. The only way to stop it, is to buy all the land around you. Granted, 99% of us have no financial means to do that, but we wish we could.
