I see both sides.

Just about anyone can open up a shooting range on their home property....there are no acreage requirements in most towns for target shooting....just a safe backstop.

If people buy property and are within the law they should use that land as they see fit.

I can understand an active shooting range close to your house can be annoying.

How close to your house do you think/know his shooting range is? Is he 500' away from your house on his 35 acres?...not that it legally matters.

Good luck

Would you rather he take the land and turn it into a subdivision? Everyone likes woods, farms, and open space around them as long as they don't have to pay for it.

It is only when you see a mosquito landing on your testicles, that you realize that there is always a way to solve problems without using violence ...

I sit on Planning and Zoning in my town, and we've run into this. Where I am, if he's using it for a business, it would have to be a use permitted by the town. If it's him and some buddies blowing off some rounds, that's a different story. If he's charging and using it as part of a business, the town may have something in it's zoning regs about it. Check with town hall.

The most we would be able to do is enforce the atv laws if on the roadway. I would check with the Town Hall regarding any noise ordinance they may have to start and contact the local PD which would be Troop B. He would need to have a suitable back stop but you would be trespassing on his property to check that. I would try talking with him to address your concerns first. Like the others have mentioned, it could turn into a turf war. Hopefully things will work out for you.

I lived right next to the plainville fish and game in Terryville for 14 years. They shot everything for automatic weapons to letting off dynamite for the 4th of July or at least it felt that way. They were great neighbors and respectful. Being a shooter myself it never bothered me or my family. To me someone who bitches about hearing gun fire who shoots themselves is like someone who owns a Harley and doesn't like the sound the bike makes.

And in case you're wondering, I only moved from that house because my kids each needed their own room and we needed another bathroom as things get crazy with 3 women in the house otherwise I'd still be there.

If I was buying a house near a gun range I wouldn't have a problem with that. But what the hell do I know about this guy? Is he safe does he have the proper back stop? I don't know $%^#. I pay to go shoot so I don't piss people off. Do I have to worry about my kids running around in the yard. And he is also certifying people for their pistol permit. So now I have people with limited experience shooting guns in my back yard. Not to say I bought my dream house that had all the peace and quiet I wanted. If he was back there hunting and blew off 3-4 shots I wouldn't give 2 @#$%^ but when it goes on for 3-4 hours at a clip yea I have a problem.

I love my new house. I too have a house down the street that loves to rip off rounds for around 2-3 hours when we are chilling by the pool on a Sunday. It is annoying sometimes I have to admit but when it does get annoying I just turn up the music!

CHANGE IS SCARY BUT IT IS REWARDING ON THE OTHER SIDE!

It doesn't sound like you've had a bad experience with him yet - obviously there isn't much you can do to stop him but if you're on ok terms with him perhaps you introduce yourself as a shooter and ask if he'd mind you joining him sometime. At least you could get a first hand look at what he's got going on back there for safety without any tension & you'd be in a better position to make friendly suggestions should something look like it might not be safe.

Doesn't help you with the noise, but at least you'd know which direction they're shooting & what he's got for a backdrop etc.
