Scouted the last couple of days and found a couple good areas of fresh turkey sign. So this morning got setup just a legal light. Only heard two gobbles way off, but with the heavy sign I knew they had to be around the area. After calling for a hour and a half I finally got a gobble and had them swing around and seen that the first bird had a full fan and coming fast. then was trotting across left to right and had to shoot quick. 25 yard shot, he was with three jakes. Got a bloody nose on the shot. those 3.5 inch TSS loads kick like a mule!
Yesterday Was able to hunt the farm we have permission. Heard gobbling all around as it got light and called in a couple of Jake's and a hen, which I elected to pass o. Ended up calling them back again passed on them again hoping for a mature Tom.
Move to the other side of the farm give out a few calls got answers, ended up calling back what I believe where the same Jakes again with the hen. Decided to take one, seeing I had to bring my son to school by 8:30 a.m.. Missed the first shot at 15 yards right in front of its face it ran out to 25 yards that time didn't miss. Another great morning in the woods.
This morning I took a friend out that I taught to hunt back in 1997 and I told him over the years I’ve missed more turkeys because they were too close than too far!
I called in 2 gobblers and 3 hens to 75 yards but the hens walked the gobblers away before we could cash in. This was up on State Land in Granby.
I’m very pleased with the amount of birds I’m seeing and hearing so far.
