D'ya miss me? I'm still here, and worse still, I'm back in my little corner of the fishing world. Shad! I've been out regularly down behind Bart's since mid-March, but we've only started hooking up within the last 2 weeks. This week, we are starting to see more than 1 a day, 'though they are still scattered. Fishing is better at the Wall since Saturday, than at Bart's, as the water there is too skinny, and lacks current.
20.April (4/20 stoners): I arrived at the wall about 11:am. Dylan, Miguel, Bill C., John, and a handful of other regulars were already plying the water. Scuttlebutt was 3-4 shad had been caught before I showed up. Bill managed to hook small buck as I started casting. A little while later, John landed another, and gave it to a woman who asked for it.
About 12:40 pm I had a solid hit close to the wall. It fought well in the current, but eventually came to the net. A small but feisty buck, my first of the year. After a Kodak™ moment, he went back in the drink. It turned out to be my One-a-Day vitamin shad. At 2:pm I headed home for Easter dinner with the family.
Another 3 or 4 shad had been caught by the time I left. With the nicer, warmer weather, the shad are beginning to move. Things should pick up over the coming week. It was nice to see some shad caught from shore this early in the season.
Tomorrow, I might slab by the Bissell in Wilson to see if anything is cooking. If so I give it a go. If not, I'll head down to the wall.
Tackle: Rod: 7' one-piece Ugly Stik GX2, med-heavy action Reel: Penn 4400SS spooled with 15# hi-viz yellow Power Pro.
Terminal tackle: 1-1/2 oz drail over a 4'+ flouro 10# leader, and hammered silver leaves in white with red St Andrew's cross, in green and yellow with an orange dot.

21.April: I stopped by the Bissell Bridge/E. Barber St. after work, arrived just before 5:pm. Only 5 people on the ramp, and none fishing. Radio, reported that they had caught a couple earlier in the day before noon.
The wind was blowing up cold from Hartford. The river was choppy, and dirty, very turbid. I made a few furtive casts, but the wind was too much. I packed it in, jawed for a while, then headed home for supper. C'est la vie, c'est la guerre.
Tomorrow and Wednesday look to be better days. If I can get out of work on time, I may head down to the wall. If not, I'll try Bissell again if the Surf-Nazis aren't camped out on the ramp.

I was wondering when they would show. Glad to hear you have connected. I will put my shad outfit in the car so I can partake when I'm by the river. Keep at it. With today's temperature on the rise, the shad will be showing up in numbers soon . More important, the fish with stripes will be on their heals.

First launch yesterday Thompsonville, first shad of the season. Plans are tomorrow launch Dexter Coffin bridge, Thursday launch Bissel bridge, wife claiming the car Friday & Saturday for a pottery show. Sunday launch Rocky Hill, Monday launch South Hadley MA, most every day thereafter somewhere. Being retired is a tough job but someone has to step up and get it done.

22.April: Hey now, MikeV! Good call to keep the shad set-up handy in the car. They are showing up, and you're right, it's only going to get better with the mild temps.
cat_in_the_hat, good luck in your travels. Things are looking up all around.
I got out of work on time for a change, and arrived at Bissell about 4:20 pm. A small handful of regulars were taking casting practice as I set up. The water was clear, decent current, and only a little flotsam drifting by in the current. Surface temp was ~52º, maybe a hair more. The breeze was light, and out of the West, aiding and abetting casting distance.
Radio said they had good luck in the morning, he catching 3 or 4 himself. On my 3rd cast, I had a soft hit, and a couple of feeble head shakes. I figured a white or yellow perch, maybe a dinky bass. Until it put some back into it, and tugged hard. Fish on! It was far out, on the drop, and as the water got skinny it pulled out the stops, and ran off some line. I love the sound of the drag singing, and she made it sing a few times, 3 solid runs, and a couple of shorter ones as she tired. Radio netted her when I worked her in close enough. She was a nice fat roe, I'm guessing between 2.5#-3#. Radio is convinced she was over 3#. I'll never know, we didn't weigh her. She was slipped back into the drink after our Kodak™ moment.
About the time I landed and released the roe, a couple of other folx showed up with a kid, maybe 7 or 8 YO. One of the guys soon had a decent hookset that turned out to be a bronze-back. He let the kid reel it in for their own Kodak™ moment. The bass was only 8" or 9" long, but the kid's smile made it a lot bigger. And then it got quiet. About 6:15 pm another regular showed up, and hooked up a nice buck on his 3rd or 4th cast. About 6:30 pm I couldn't take the rumbly in my tumbly anymore, and headed home for supper.
The Surf-Nazis were not out in force today, only 2 showed up, and they had CT plates on their vehicles. They were considerate while launching, and motoring to and from the ramp. They played more than 1/2 way across the river. A tip of the CTF hat to them.
Much needed reel therapy this afternoon, with good company, and a couple of shad for good measure. I'll be back there again tomorrow after work.
Tackle: Rod: one-piece Ugly Stik, 4'6" U/L Pro Reel: Shimano Sahara FJ 1000, spooled with 15# Power Pro (Hi-Viz Yellow).
Terminal Tackle: 1/2 oz drail over a 4'+, 10# flouro leader, and a hammered silver willow leaf, in white with a red St. Andrew's cross.

23.April: I headed over to Bissell after work, arriving about 4:20 pm. There were 3 shadaholics plying the water as I set up. Peter had a middling buck on the bank, the other 2 had the stinky kitty. The water was down below the middle cleat, which was under water yesterday. The water is dropping fairly quickly, although it was mostly clear, and had a fair current. Surface temp about the same as yesterday, ~52º. There was more of a breeze than yesterday, but it was from the West, and only helped us cast farther.
A littel after 4:30 pm, I had a decent hit that left little doubt it was shad. Fish on! We played in the current for less than a minute, when it jumped and threw the leaf. About 4-5 casts later, I had another decent hit, but after a couple or 3 headshakes, the line went slack. And that was all she wrote for me today. It stayed quiet after that until about 5:45 pm. Peter landed another buck after a spirited fight. Manny and Tom joined us just before 6:pm. Manny landed a nice sized bronze-back shortly after. About 6:30, I packed up to get some supper. Just before I drove off, Peter was wrestling with another, what I presume to be, shad. His pole was well bent, and fighting him hard. I almost went back...
If he comes back to Bissell tomorrow, I may get the 411 on that one. And I will be back there tomorrow, as the shad are coming in with the mild weather.
Tackle: Rod: one-piece Ugly Stik, 4'6" U/L Pro Reel: Shimano Sahara FJ 1000, spooled with 15# Power Pro (Hi-Viz Yellow).
Terminal Tackle: 1/2 oz drail was replaced with a 3/4 oz weight, over a 4'+, 10# flouro leader, and hammered silver willow leaves, in white with a red St. Andrew's cross, chartreuse and orange w/black dot, and yellow w/black dot. St. Andrew's leaf got the most attention today before I lost it to the river.

24.April: Arrived at Bissell about 4:20 pm, wind gusting from the South. The river was choppy, very turbid and the wind was pushing water against the tide. A half dozen shadaholics were jawing in the parking lot, and none were casting. I made a couple of dozen casts, but only got fouled with weeds and leaves every cast. Radio joined me for a bit before we both called it an afternoon. Nothing was doing in the wind, chop, and turbidity. According to Radio, the shad and weather was more accommodating in the morning.
Tomorrow may or may not be better, in terms of a Southerly wind. I'll figure that out tomorrow with feet on the ground.
Terminal Tackle: 3/4 oz drail over a 4'+, 10# flouro leader, and a hammered silver willow leaf in yellow w/black dot.

Fishing is like the lottery. You got be in it to win it. The weather down here (Old Lyme) looks pretty good. Work commitments kept me off the water today. Glad you're trying latter. Somebody has to catch all those shad.

MikeV, I'll always keep trying!
25.April: Conditions about the same as yesterday. Southerly winds creating chop, and muddying the water. The surface temp was almost 60º! The wind wasn't as bad as yesterday so I gave it a half hour. Same results as yesterday, weeds/leaves on almost every cast. The snagging was worse today. I lost 4 or 5 leaves in the short time I was there. And a handful of Surf-Nazis showed up. They weren't too bad, and cleared off the ramp, and motored out away from us.
Peter had a shad on the bank on my arrival, and about 15 mins later, he landed another one. Both middling bucks. Just before 5:pm, he landed a fair sized bronze-back. The couple of others fishing caught nothing. I left at 5:pm, frustrated with the conditions. I'll head down to the Wall in Cromwell sometime tomorrow afternoon if the rain isn't too persistent.

26.April: The Wall, Cromwell. I arrived about 12:30 pm in a light rain, and 10-12 people with their arms in a cast. The water was up a bit with a decent current, turbid but not opaque; not that you could see far into the river. Flotsam was few and far between. The rain persisted on and off through the afternoon. The breeze came up with the approaching cold front around 2:pm give or take.
There was ample evidence of shad caught today. The 411 was they were being caught fairly regularly. About a half hour into my casting practice, I had a hit close to the wall. It put it's head down, and tugged hard, and then it did it again. I turned it in to the wall, and it dug deep, stripping line as it ran out, more than I had taken in. When I gained line, it dug-in again, and ran off what I had gained, and it did this a few more times. It was net shy, and tried to run deep up, and down the river. When we finally got it to the net, it was a fat buck. He weighed in at 2.6#, and had fought well above his weight class. Other than a few weak hits, and bumps, he turned out to be my vitamin shad for the day.
By the time I left at 3:pm, several more people had joined the party. I wasn't really counting, but saw about a dozen shad landed, and a few more lost. At times there were doubles on, and I saw one triple. Today was the busiest I've seen on the river since last year. Life is good.
Tackle: Rod: 7' one-piece Ugly Stik GX2, med-heavy action Reel: Penn 4400SS spooled with 15# hi-viz yellow Power Pro.
Terminal tackle: 1-1/2 oz drail over a 4'+ flouro 10# leader, and hammered silver leaves in red/purple/black (Steve's Leaves), Bill's stop light pattern, and Bill's Jamaican pattern. Steve's leaf was the answer for me today.
I will be back down to the Wall tomorrow. We'll see how the coming cold front affects the run. Tight lines!

27.April: The Wall, Cromwell. Pulled into the lot just after 11:am to more than a dozen people lining the wall. Most were casting for shad, with a couple of kids with meat poles down at the far end. One shad was being landed as I set up. By all accounts, it had been a slow morning. The water, despite yesterday's rain wasn't up as much as I anticipated. It was about the same color, and current as yesterday, and there was surprisingly little flotsam drifting by the assembled masses. The breeze was generally cooperative, a little blustery, but out of the West.
About 11:45 I had a hit. After a brief scuffle, I netted a middling buck, about 2#. Things seemed to pick up around then, and before I left, I saw over a dozen shad caught , about half went back into the river. Some of the bucks were long and fat. Only a couple of roes were caught, and they were released. Total for the day: one dinky 5" striper (smallest I ever caught!), 2 shad, and 2 alewives.
I started the day with my heavier tackle. After a few hours, I switched out to my U/L set up, and just before 2:30 pm, I hooked into another shad. I was hoping for a good scuffle, but Mr. Buck-shad didn't have much fight in him, and he came to the net all too soon. After a Kodak™ moment, he was released. My back was barking, and I was getting thirsty, so I called it a day at 3:pm. They were still landing shad when I left.
Starting Tackle: Rod: 7' one-piece Ugly Stik GX2, med-heavy action Reel: Penn 4400SS spooled with 15# hi-viz yellow Power Pro.
Terminal tackle: 1-1/2 oz drail over a 4'+ flouro 10# leader, and hammered silver leaves in Bill's Jamaican pattern and stop light pattern, and (IDK who made it) yellow and green with silver glitter. The Jamaican produced shad #1.
Finishing Tackle: Rod: one-piece Ugly Stik, 4'6" U/L Pro Reel: Shimano Sahara FJ 1000, spooled with 15# Power Pro (Hi-Viz Yellow).
Terminal Tackle: 1 oz drail over a 4'+, 10# flouro leader, and a hammered silver willow leaves in white with a red St. Andrew's cross, and Steve's Leaves in purple, pink, and black w/eye. Steve's leaf produced shad #2.
Thinking about hitting Bissell tomorrow, as I'm not inclined to fight rush hour traffic after work to head down to Cromwell, or Rocky Hill. Tight lines!

28.April: Bissell/E Barber St. I pulled into the park about 4:30 pm. The water was high, partway up the ramp, rising and muddy, but had a decent current.
One shadaholic, named Radio was taking casting practice. He hadn't had much luck, only one for the day, and he started in the morning. Two others were drowning worms looking for white perch, or anything for that matter. I made a few casts because I was there, expecting nothing. And I succeeded in getting nothing but grass, leaves, and snags. The bottom of the ramp ate 3 leaves, and I kept getting fouled with the worm soakers. Another regular showed up about 4:45, took one cast, got snagged and lost his willow. And he just left. By 5:pm, Radio and I had enough frustration, and headed to our respective homes.
If the water is still high and muddy tomorrow, I may fight the rush hour traffic to head down to Rocky Hill or Cromwell. There wasn't enough room for the 5 of us to make it worthwhile.
Rod: one-piece Ugly Stik, 4'6" U/L Pro Reel: Shimano Sahara FJ 1000, spooled with 15# Power Pro (Hi-Viz Yellow).
Terminal Tackle: 1 oz drail over a 4'+, 10# flouro leader, and hammered silver willow leaves, Steve's Leaves in purple, pink, and black w/eye, and a Bill C. "stop light" pattern (white with the obligatory red/green dots).

Glad to see consistently getting out AND catching. It's great to catch shad. After a long winter and a crappy, rainy, cold, damp Spring; it's just great to get out there and fish on these nice days. I'm happy to see you doing this. I will join you soon.

MikeV, you're right. It's great catching shad after a long, damp, cold spring. I hope you get out soon, and you're welcome to join our chapter of Shadaholics. A merry band of misfits to be sure.
29.April: The Wall, Cromwell. I arrived at 4:30 pm after a surprisingly easy drive down to the Wall from Hartford. Apparently rush hour was cancelled today, traffic was relatively light and moving along. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The river was still rising, turbid, with lots of grass and sticks riding in the current, and choppy. And the wind was whipping up from Middletown to Hartford. There were only about a half dozen folx working the Wall, and the 411 wasn't encouraging. One reporter said he stopped at Rocky Hill, but it was just to windy to fish. John, who retired to take up shad fishing full time wasted 8 hours to catch nothing.
In the hour and a half I put up with the wind, only 2 shad were C&R. Middling bucks, maybe 2#. No Fish Today for me.
Tackle: Rod: 7' one-piece Ugly Stik GX2, med-heavy action Reel: Penn 4400SS spooled with 15# hi-viz yellow Power Pro.
Terminal tackle: 2 oz drail (I could hardly keep it on the bottom with 1.5 oz) over a 4'+ flouro 10# leader, and hammered silver leaves in Bill C's Jamaican pattern.

30.April: The Wall. When I arrived about 4:40 pm, there were less than a dozen shadaholics plying the water. Two shad were landed in short order as I set up. The river was down a little, turbid with a fair current. Not too much debris floated by, and the breeze was much lighter than yesterday, and out of the South/Southwest. Rumor had it that Bill C shot a surface temp around 56º F.
Reports were that the action had been fair earlier in the day. Of course, by the time I showed up, it had fallen off. I caught the stinky kitty, and only saw about 8 shad landed, with about 4 others lost before I left at 6:30 pm. At least it was a good day to be out practicing my casting, and the banter was entertaining.
Terminal tackle: 1.5 oz drail over a 4' flouro 10# leader, and a hammered silver leaf in Bill C's Candy Corn pattern.

1.May: late report. I got out of work too late to do more than drive by Bissell to see what was happening. Two guys soaking worms for white perch, or whatever else might bite, and Radio who was getting ready to pack it in. He reported that nothing was happening. The river was only down a little, dark and turbid, with not much current. And not enough bank was exposed to fish anywhere but on the ramp.
I took a few furtive casts, and all I got was ramp, weeds, more ramp, and one of the guys lines. Not. Worth. The. Effort. I headed home early.
2.May: The Wall. I arrived about 4:40 pm, and found the wall was lined wall to wall with shadaholics, and a couple of meat soakers for good measure. The shad were cooperating today. I caught a middling buck on my 2nd cast, and a couple, 3 or 4 casts later, I had another. And there was action on the Wall from the left corner down past the middle of the wall. I don't know how many shad were landed, or lost, but pretty much everyone hooked up at least once! An hour after I arrived, I landed a 3rd shad, also a middling buck. High tide was predicted for about 6:pm, and about that time the action had stopped for all but a few alewives. What a great day to be out.
Terminal tackle: 1.5 oz drail over a 4' flouro 10# leader, and a hammered silver leaf in Bill C's Candy Corn pattern.
Tomorrow is a work day with the Jeep club. Cleaning trails, maybe blazing a new one at a property we wheel. It's always nice to give a little back to a landowner who allows us access to their property. I'll be back on the Wall on Sunday. In the meantime, tight lines!

4.May: The Wall. I hit the wall early for a change, at 8:30 am, to beat the rain forecast for this afternoon. It turned out to be a good call.
On arrival there were about a dozen shadholics taking casting practice. It seemed nobody was catching. By 10:am a couple or 3 had been caught, and it seemed to pick up a little bit; little being the operative word. About 10:30 I finally set the hook into something other than an alewife. I fat white perch. About 15 minutes later I had a solid hook set, into also not an alewife. A middling buck shad that didn't have much fight in it. Of course it inhaled the hook, so that went into somebody's cooler. And that turned out to be my vitamin shad for the day. By the time the rain started in earnest, around 2:30 pm, I had only seen maybe a dozen or so shad caught in the time I was there.
And speaking of rain, the forecast is not looking good for the first half of the week. I'll take it day to day, but it doesn't look like I'll be out much this week.
Terminal tackle: 1.5 oz drail over a 4' flouro 10# leader, and a hammered silver leaf in pink w/white stripe & black dot.

Great job. Your persistence pays. You are getting out in good and bad weather AND catching fish. The comradery you enjoy with the other shad fishermen is the icing on the cake. I will try to get out this week to try for anything when the weather permits.

MikeV, Tomorrow looks good, weather-wise. The CT River is in flood, and rising. Dark and turbid, and lots of flotsam. Cromwell was just fishable this afternoon. I bagged it after about an hour of trying. Nothing was biting. A couple of regulars stopped by before I packed it in. They said they, and their son had some success at Bart's today. I didn't even think to hit Bart's today. Ah well, 20/20 hindsight.
Tomorrow after work I'll hit up Bart's. We may be fishing from Pleasant St, but their report was that the water was clear, and manageable. I don't know what your schedule looks like, but you're welcome to join me (us) near the railroad bridge behind Bart's in Windsor.

Report just heard at the South Hadley boat launch. HG&E just cancelled the first weekend of the 2025 Holyoke Shad Derby May 10 & 11 due to expected near catastrophic flooding from heavy rain Thursday night and Friday that will add to current very high water. There would be few places to fish and safety concerns for inexperienced anglers and children.

Hi Paul, I was talking to Dylan at Bart's this afternoon. He told me exactly that about the Holyoke Derby.
The water at Bart's was just about 4' below Pleasant St in Windsor. The current was excellent, but the water was coffee colored. I spent a half hour taking casting practice, but nobody was catching anything.
I'll try again at Bart's tomorrow, hopefully the water clears up over night. With the forecasted rain tomorrow night into Saturday, we probably won't see conditions improve until late Sunday at the earliest. C'est la vive.

8.May: I skipped out of work early for an appointment, which allowed me to get to Bart's by 3:15 pm. Four regulars were set up, 3 casting. One expired shad lay at their feet, and Dylan was bringing in his 6th shad of the day, a big roe (he started at 1:30). The water was down about 2' from yesterday, clear, with a good stiff current. Cissy hooked up next, and landed a nice fat roe. I had a couple of soft hits, but they didn't stick for more than a few head shakes.
About 4:30 I had a solid hook set, that immediately put it's back into it. It hit far out, past mid-stream, and in the current it fought hard. When the water got skinny, it really dug in, and jumped clear of the water. When it saw the net, it really gave my drag a work out. It turned out to be a large, fat buck, not the roe we expected. 20 minutes later, and I was into another shad. Not as big as the first, but Dylan was on at the same time. It's been a long while since we saw a double at Bart's. Radio showed up about then, and Keegan. Radio hooked up, his first at Bart's this year (not his first shad, he has done well at Bissell, and the Wall.)
With the rumble of thunder in the distance, and darkening skies, we packed it in about 5:45. Dylan scored 10 landed for the day, and I counted about 10 shad landed by our crew during the time I was there. Most were large bucks, but a couple of roes were in the mix for good measure.
Tackle: I tried, but the U/L didn't do it with the high, fast water at Bart's. That big buck would have really challenged me if it had hit the U/L set up. The big boy rig worked like a charm. Rod: 7' one-piece Ugly Stik GX2, med-heavy action Reel: Penn 4400SS spooled with 15# hi-viz yellow Power Pro.
Terminal tackle: 1.5 oz drail over a 4' flouro 10# leader, and a hammered silver leaf in Bill C's Jamaican pattern. Dylan and Ernie found success with one of Dylan's creations with purple, and both threw 1 oz drails.
The forecast looks like tomorrow will be a washout. I'll see what Saturday, and Sunday bring. Tight lines!

That's a great outing. It's fun to go ultralight when conditions permit. You matched your outfit to the conditions. That is the right thing to do because you put significantly less stress on the fish when you control it instead of the other way around. Especially when catching & releasing it is important not to overly exhaust the fish. That's a very solid outing.

11.May: Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there.
I pulled up behind Bart's at 11:am. There was a good crowd, almost a dozen shadaholics, working the bank upstream of the RR bridge, and Bill C was landing one as I set up. By all accounts, the shad were in today. The water was up, and backing up through the storm drain flooding the road under the RR bridge. The current was excellent, water clarity wasn't bad, the surface temp was about 59ºF, and there wasn't much debris in the river. The water was still rising even when I left after 3:pm. In sum, about perfect!
About 11:30 I had my first hook set. A decent buck, caught close to shore, he put up a decent fight. About 15 or 20 minutes later, I had a good hit way out past mid-stream. It fought well, and eventually we got a nice fat roe in the net. After a Kodak™ moment, she went back into the drink. And about 12:Noon, I got hit again, out past mid-stream, eventually landing another nice roe. We had our Kodak™ moment, and she went back into the river.
Terminal tackle: 1.5 oz drail over a 4'+ flouro 10# leader, and a hammered silver leaf in Bill C's candy corn pattern (#2 leaf), and Dylan's candy corn pattern (#3 leaf).
Tomorrow is supposed to be a lot like today in terms of weather, so I'll be back. Tight lines!

12.May: Pulled up behind Bart's about 4:45 pm. About a half dozen shadaholics were working the bank. And a couple of more arrived as I started casting practice. The river was down about 6" from yesterday, nice and clear, with a decent current. The water under the RR bridge on Pleasant St was down, even though the street was still blocked off. The reprobates loitering on the bank reported the shad were around, but not as active as yesterday.
I took casting practice until about 6:45, and only caught a few alewives. I only saw about a half dozen, or 7 shad caught by the other recidivists. A slow afternoon to be sure. At least the alewives kept most of us busy, and a few of them were surprisingly fat and long. Still, it was a really nice day to be out with the arm in a cast.
Terminal tackle: 1.5 oz drail over a 4'+ flouro 10# leader, and a hammered silver leaf in Dylan's candy corn pattern (#3 leaf), and Bill C's Jamaican pattern (#3 leaf).

13.May--Pretty much the same story as yesterday: Pulled up behind Bart's about 4:45 pm. About a half dozen shadaholics were working the bank. And a couple of more arrived as I started casting practice. The river was down about 2' from yesterday, clear, but with less current. The shad were not cooperating since about noon. The alewives, on the other hand, were plentiful.
I stayed until almost 7:pm, catching only a bunch of alewives. At least they kept the skunk off. I only saw 3 shad caught, things have slowed down in the afternoons since Sunday. Reports are that mornings tend to be more productive. By tomorrow the Wall might be accessible. One of the regulars drove by today, but didn't even get out of his car. The water was just at or a little below the capstones of the wall, the water murky, still. We'll see what the 411 might be tomorrow. I'd like to hit the Wall again, soon.

14.May: I got stuck at work until after 5:pm, arriving behind Bart's about 5:40. 9 Shadaholics were hardly working, catching alewives every few casts. A 10th was landing a small buck as I set up. The river was down another couple of feet, fair current, and nice and clear.
The 411 was that the shad were few and far between. However, the alewives were well represented. Other than a few alewives to keep the skunk off, I got nada--no fish today. By the time I left about 7:pm, I had only seen 4 shad played, and 3 landed.
I'm going out of town for the weekend. On Sunday afternoon, and Monday I'll try to hit the river again. Hopefully we don't get too much rain, and the Wall is accessible again. We'll see.

18.May--a late report: I was away for the weekend, and we had hardly any rain at the cottage in Litchfield. But, since I wasn't sure how much rain the river system picked up, I opted for Bart's rather than the Wall. The water was way down, clarity was fair, the current was decent, and the surface temp was about 64ºF. The first hints of cotton appeared on the water.
I parked near the RR bridge about 11:40 am, finding only 2 shadaholics working the bank. Trent was landing a decent buck, and added it to a twin on his stringer. This was a good sign. About an hour later I had a light tap-tap. When I set the hook, I thought I had snagged the bottom, nothing was moving. Until I gave it some slack to try to float the leaf or weight off the bottom. And then it ran deep, and downstream, doubling the rod, and taking a bit of drag. With the U/L I had trouble turning its head to the bank, and a waiting net. After a good 5 minutes or so, it finally tired, and slipped into the net. I didn't weigh or measure it, as I wanted to get it back into the water quickly. It was long, over 20", and weighed about 3#, one of the biggest shad I've caught this year. Lots of fun and fight on light tackle in skinny water!
An hour or so later, Trent caught and released another shad, almost as big and thick as mine. The action was slow, but worth the effort and waiting for the size of the few shad that hit. A few alewives, and white perch made an appearance, and entertained us between shad. I packed it in a bit after 2:pm.

I love reading your reports. Keep them coming. I still remember the days (many, many years ago) when we used to fish at the Enfield Dam, and had a shad on almost every cast. They were schooled up below the dam (when there was a dam) and you you couldn't miss. However, those days, obviously, are gone. Keep the reports coming.

21.May: I'm out of commission until next Wednesday, at least. I had to have a procedure done yesterday, and need to recuperate. The follow up app't isn't til next Tuesday. OTOH, with the forecast Nor'easter, there won't be much fishing until next week anyway.

26.May: The Wall. I felt well enough today to try to get back into the game. I arrived at the Wall at 1:pm. I found not one Shadaholic to be seen on such a fine day. There were, however, about a half dozen meat-stick pitchers soaking their chunk baits and worms from mid-wall down to the right terminus. The river was up to one course below the lowest capstones at the left side of the Wall. Turbid, with some flotsam, and a concerning amount of "cotton" in the current (which was not unexpected for Memorial Day). The current was stiff enough for a 2 oz. drail.
I had light bumps on my first few casts, and had a gentle hit and hook up by 1:15. After a short, but spirited fight, I netted one of the smallest buck shad I've caught this year. After a Kodak™ moment he was repatriated with the river. One of the meat-stick guys looked at me like I was crazy for tossing it back in the drink. LOL. By 1:30 I had another light hit, but it had more back in it, and fought a bit harder. It was net-shy, and made me work to net it solo. It turned out to be a small roe, maybe 2#. After her Kodak™ moment, she went back in the drink. Meat-stick guy just had to ask, "why'd you throw it back?" Because I want it to go make more shad, so I can come back and catch more in the future. He was crestfallen. I told him, if I got a bleeder I'd give it to him.
After those two shad, I didn't get so much as another bump-bump, the current slowed down some, and the cotton got thicker on the water. By 3:pm, I was done picking cotton off the line, and out of the guides. Dunkin called to me for an iced coffee, and I headed home. It was a very good day to take casting practice.
Terminal tackle: 2 oz drail over a 4' flouro 10# leader, and a hammered silver leaf in Bill C's Spotty pattern (white w/4 red dots).

Glad you are feeling better and able to chase shad again. The weather was pretty crappy over the Holiday weekend so you did not miss much. Two shad in the middle of the day is great. The meat stick crew are different then the rest of us. They often fish with heavier gear, more than not with bait. They are so concerned with not loosing a hooked fish that they overlook not hooking up anywhere near as frequently as the good sportsmen like your self. Probably best not to set them straight because if it has fins it will be "released in grease" .

Thanks, MikeV! I have enough trouble minding my own business that I don't have the time or energy to mind others'. Besides, the only behavior I can control is my own. Sometimes... OTOH, I am not above dropping a dime (it's a quarter now, isn't it-if you can find a payphone) for serious poaching.
27-28.May: Tuesday and Wednesday at the Wall I struck out, got the stinky kitty. Well except for a big blueback on Wednesday.
29.May: I arrived at the Wall at 2:30 pm. Four shadaholics were wearing out their rotator cuffs as I parked. One small buck shad was being netted as I set up. The 411 was the shad were in, and cooperating! It was overcast, and the water was smooth as glass. Clear, with ZERO cotton, only a little flotsam, and a fair current. About quarter to 3:pm, I set the hook on my vitamin shad. It put up a decent fight in the current, and we netted a small roe, about 2#, maybe, after a brief contest. After a Kodak™ moment, she was released. Other than an alewife, that was all she wrote for me, but it kept the off.
The action was sporadic through the afternoon. Just before I left about 4:45 pm, one of the regulars who was soaking a chunk at the far right terminus, had a hard hit on his meat stick. He landed a 39" striper, a little over 23#. After measuring, weighing, and a Kodak™ moment, he released it.
Terminal tackle: 1.5 oz drail over a 4' flouro 10# leader, and a hammered silver leaf in pink w/black dot.
Tomorrow is another day, and I hope the cotton stays off the water. Tight lines!

Glad to see you grabbing every possible opportunity and getting rewarded most of the time. I cringe at your terminal tackle when I see anything over an ounce. Sure 1.5 or 2 oz. gets you where you need to be; but it's just not the same fishing with the lighter stuff.
The weather has been very unkind this Spring. Looks like tomorrow will be partly cloudy/mostly crappy with rain for much of the day. I might have to sneak out even if just for a little while. What little sanity I have is fading fast.

Just stumbled upon this.
I have been calling this year - the year of the shad.
Off Clinton I have been consistently able to get shad. I have some pretty cool videos there have been times if I had a cast net we could have gotten them. Live lining them has helped cull out schoolie bass.
If shad is your thing shoot me a pm. I will be out most every day this coming week.

I hear you MikeV. 1.5-2 oz weights are hefty, but when the current is strong, it's required to get to the bottom. And when a shad hits, they fight plenty hard in that current!
Ghinoke, I appreciate your offer, and I'd love to take you up on it. Unfortunately, I'm a working man and can't spare the time during the week. Most of my fishing is done after work, and on the weekend when I can squeeze in a few hours.
29.May-2.June: the Wall in Cromwell. No Fish Today. Or yesterday, the day before, and the day before that, except for the odd alewife. The run has wound down for this year. Sure, a few shad are still being caught here and there by the retirees who have all day to wear out their rotator cuffs. I'll give it a try after work every chance I get through the rest of the week before I put up the gear for the year.
Today was a 2 oz weight kind of day. The water was up 3' over yesterday, up to the lowest capstones of the wall, and still rising. Very turbid, but surprisingly little flotsam, and cotton. The current, as noted, was very stiff, and it was tough to hold the bottom even with 2 oz of weight.
Terminal tackle: 2 oz drail over a 4' flouro 10# leader, and I threw the rainbow at 'em for naught.

Sounds like you will need to switch gears. What's next? Small mouths should be getting good soon. When I used to fish the river north of 291, I was always amazed at the size and quantity of both catfish and carp that I would see while fishing for smallies. You could also leave the river in for some large mouth bass ponds and lakes. There's always Long Island Sound but I like the idea of fishing close to home. It makes for a lot more trips which is why I moved from Tolland to Old Lyme.

MikeV, I'm not ready to switch gears, yet... 3.June: Bart's after work. There were only a couple of us working the bank. The water was better than the CT river, clear, not much debris, but the current was lackluster. Except for an alewife to keep the off, nada. Nobody else got into shad either. C'est la vie.
4th & 5th.June I didn't get out for casting practice. Some chores needed my tender affections.
Today, 6.June would have been my late wife's 60th birthday. It was a little rough getting out of bed this morning, but I soldiered off to work. After getting out of work a bit late, I headed down to the Wall in Cromwell, arriving about 4:50 pm. The water was down about 4' from Monday, turbid but not chocolate milk, only a little flotsam and cotton drifting by in a fair current.
Only one regular was in attendance on arrival, and he wasn't targeting shad. He was chunking for striper with another 1/2 dozen folx of like mind. About 5:pm a semi-regular showed up, just in time for me to hook into a middling shad. After a short tussle, my compatriot netted it. We had our Kodak™ moment, and net-man asked if he could have it for striper bait. Sure, why not, it was a middling buck. If it was a roe fat with eggs, I'd have thrown it back.
About 5:15 another shadaholic joined us. My net-man got onto a shad, and brought it to the net. He added it to his bait box. I then had a good hit, and a short tussle with another shad, but it dropped the hook after a couple of runs. By 5:30 I was on shad #2 for a decent fight in the current. After getting it into the net, it turned out to be a spawned out roe. She had done what she came into the river to do. Excellent! Net-man caught another shad about 5:45. It was a decent buck, long but thin. About 5:50, I got onto another shad, and was able to bring it to the net, my 3rd of the day. After a Kodak™ moment, back into the drink it went, a fair buck, not too long, but thick. A 4th shadaholic joined us after we called and taunted him. The banter kept us busy and entertained despite the lack of more shad action. By 7:pm, the rumbly in my tumbly sent me packing for home. Today was a good day!
Terminal tackle: 2 oz drail over a 4' flouro 10# leader, and a hammered silver leaf in white with 4 red dots (Bill C's "Spotty" pattern).

Friday was a rough day living (sorry for your loss) but a great day fishing. I don't know about you but it's damn near impossible to be unhappy while fishing. Being outdoor, interacting with nature is about the most joyful thing there is. There are some of us (you are obviously one of them) that get this and fish frequently for the pure happiness it provides. We are blessed to have this strong appreciation. I will be 66 in August. Remember: we don't stop fishing because we get old...we get old because we stop fishing.
Fish for shad. Fish for striped bass, Fish for blue gills. Fish for whatever. It doesn't matter. Just keep fishing. Fishing is life. Life is good.
